  • (NTU) is one of the four autonomous universities in Singapore and a research-intensive university Established as Nanyang Technological Institute in 1981
  • These are the four different colleges in NTU (covering various disciplines).
  • Aims to provide a broad-based educationPrepare students for the global working world
  • Thenwe have NTU Library which is one of the departments in NTUPlease allow me to show a quick video about NTU Libraries, created by one of our paraprofessionals and a group of student assistants
  • The library organization, besides the subject libraries also consists of groups which are further divided into divisions. These divisions work together to provide the necessary support to the users and the subject libraries. The divisions are Acquisitions Divisions, Serials & E-Resources Division, Bibliographic Services Division, Instructional Services Division, Library Technology & Systems Division,Project Development Division, Scholarly Communications Division, Access Services Division Library Promotion Division.
  • The library has total staff strength of about 103, with 45 professional staff and 58 support staff. The support staff includes those with and without library qualifications – and library paraprofessionals make up the support staff group in NTU Libraries.
  • Let me give you an insight about library paraprofessionals in Singapore
  • There have been many different titles associated with library paraprofessional, for instance, library technical assistant, library officer and other titles related to their specializations. Paraprofessional and professional librarians work together under the guidance and supervision of another senior professional librarian.
  • Local studies for library paraprofessionals were first introduced in 1983 by the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS), where successful candidates were awarded the Certificate for Library Assistants. In 1994 this course was replaced with a two-year part-time course, named Certificate in Library and Information Studies. This training programme was proposed following a local study on library technicians. In 1996, the Diploma in Information Studies, was implemented in Temasek Polytechnic, training students who have completed their General Cambridge Examinations (Ordinary Level) so that they could be employed in information-related organizations. Following the closure of this courses in Temasek PolytechnicWorkplace Skills Qualification (WSQ) – five on–the-job training programmes run for current support staff. The training are provided for support in general reference, collection maintenance, acquisitions & serials work, circulation and bibliographic control.has Levels 1 to 5Supported by Workforce Development Authority (a government body to encourage the citizens for continuous upgrading) and is run by Library Association of Singapore, which I could say that it I a Singaporean counterpart of ALIA.An ongoing programme to constantly upgrade the skills of support staffAnyone who has been assessed as competent and received Statements of Attainment by LAS for all five programmes will be eligible to receive a Workforce Development Authority's Higher Certificate in Library and Information Services
  • Bachelor’s Degree Pre-requisite:(“A” Levels or Diploma)
  • Next, we will cover on library paraprofessionals in NTU Libraries. Here is a photo of us, paraprofessionals presenting poster at a national library seminar in 2009.
  • Currently we have seven library paraprofessional positions, who provide support to the professional librarians in terms of library operations, library promotion, technology and technical services.
  • Most of our paraprofessionals have obtained the Diploma in Information Studies certificate from Temasek Polytechnic as mentioned earlier. Those with a diploma not related to information studies, also form the group of paraprofessionals as their expertise is required in certain areas such as technology and library promotion which will be further explained
  • The paraprofessionals take on different roles and responsibilities, not limited to library operational roles. We will look into the various roles that the paraprofessionals take on.
  • [Soma – photos]Presently, we have 3 paraprofessionals working in the subject libraries. These paraprofessionals oversee the daily operations of the library which includes supervising the maintenance library’s facilitiesEnsuring that consistent services are provided to the users, hiring and managing student assistants In addition, they assist the professional librarians in the promotional activities such as setting up book displays, exhibitions and other medium such as blogs.
  • NTU Library hires about 220 students assistants to assist staff in the routine work. Students assistants are employed to supplement the staff in performing various tasks such as routine processing, shelving & graphic design. The paraprofessionals manage these students assistants by selecting the suitable candidates, providing training, delegating tasks and handling payments for the student assistants.
  • NTU Library is one of the first academic libraries in Singapore, to have established the Library Promotion Division. Our paraprofessional working in Library Promotion Division usually has experience or qualifications in graphic design work.
  • Our paraprofessionals impart their expertise and work alongside with student assistants, to create eye-catching visuals, wall papers, web banners, collaterals and videos to promote the library resources and services. Besides that, he/she assists the librarians to coordinate annual library promotional events such as library orientation and fairs.
  • Paraprofessional also play a role in the instutional repositories namely the DR-NTU (Open Access) and DR-NTU (Restricted Access). paraprofessional assisting in this area play an active role in administrating all submissions collected in both repositories. She performs basic copyright checks on the journal articles and conference papers submitted by NTU academic staff.
  • These are some of the interesting forms of work done by NTU undergraduates for their Final Year Projects.Besides textual documents, the repository contains videos which are visually appealing
  • NTU Library has been actively engaged in a number of social web applications to reach out to the users and make the library resources accessible by using these applications.paraprofessionals play a huge role in maintaining most of these applications to ensure that they are readily available to the users and report to the professionals on any downtime and issues.
  • For instance, our paraprofessional helps to maintain the NTU Library toolbar, which was created for users to have better access to library resources. She also ensures that the toolbar is readily available to users and attends to any issues that may arise.
  • Paraprofessionals assist the librarians to source for equipment and software by contacting vendors, requesting for quotations and recommending them to the professional librarians. The paraprofessionals also keep themselves updated on the latest equipment available in the market. The revamp of Lee Wee Nam Library and Business Library were such projects that involved equipping such various equipment as you can see here. Equipment include smart boards, several two- and three-screen workstations, touch screen computers and a large video wall. Next, I shall hand over to my colleague, Shikinwho will explain how paraprofessionals are able to connect with the majority of users, mainly undergraduates.
  • Most of the paraprofessionals hired in NTU Libraries belong to Generation Y.Together with the professionals, they are the bridge between users and the library, therefore forming the “youth to youth” linkThe library paraprofessionals can easily connect with the majority of the library users as they share the same demographics of the largest group of library users, who are the undergraduates Paraprofessionals are the ‘connectors’ individuals in the various roles that they undertake.
  • These are the demographics whichare the real time statistics of NTU Library Facebook page. This shows that most of fans, presumably the users, belonging to the age group as mentioned earlier.
  • Varying users’ behaviours towards the library services is a main challenge faced by paraprofessionals today. Some users may be more competent to use our resources while others may find it challenging. Learning curve differs among the large pool of users. Paraprofessionals may encounter users with different learning approaches or learning curves.

  • We, paraprofessionals should cultivate a positive learning attitude and flexibility to changes in our roles We will continue to relieve the professional librarians of some of the routine tasks so that the professionals could focus on providing higher value-added services demanded by users in this knowledge economy We should continually upgrade ourselves with more training and practice
  • In 1987, Marshal J. predicted that……(read quote)Our current roles were predicted back in 1987 where much of what librarians have done will be done by library technician in the future…. (casual) which I’m sure many of you will agree..In NTU Library, even though the paraprofessional are one of the small groups we believe that our contributions are significant to the library..Marshal, J. (1987). The occupational context. Fourth National Conference ofLibrary Technicians. Library Technicians : Paraprofessionals in theInformation Workplace, 28th-31st Oct., 1989. Adelaide: Auslib Press.
  • We would like to thank ALI A for giving us this platform to share about NTU Library paraprofessionals from Singapore. And also not forgetting Kerrie Kelly from State Library of Victoria and her friends for their kind and endless support. Last but not least, we would also like to thank our Deputy University Librarian, Mrs Isabella Trahn for providing this wonderful opportunity to travel to Australia and deliver a presentation.
