  • 1. WELCOME TO EUNOS CC IAEC PONGAL HARVEST FESTIVAL 2009!
  • 2. WHAT IS PONGAL?  A harvest festival celebrated by Tamils all over the world  A celebration of thanking the rain, sun and farm animals for their contribution towards the harvest
  • 3. WHEN IS PONGAL?  Falls on the first day of the tamil month of thai (Jan 14th or jan 15TH)  Four-day affair  1st day – bhogi  2nd day – thai pongal  3rd day – maattu pongal (cow)  4th day - kaanum pongal
  • 4. PREPARING FOR PONGAL  Homes are cleaned  Shopping for new clothes, prayer items, food items  Preparing for prayers
  • 5. PONGAL IN SINGAPORE - I  Prayers are offered in temples and homes  Rice is cooked in new pots and allowed to boil over symbolizing as a sign of prosperity
  • 6. PONGAL IN SINGAPORE - II  Sugar canes are tied at the doorsteps of homes  Some homes draw kolam near their doorsteps  Pongal is distributed among families and friends  Families have meals together
  • 7. MAATTU (COW) PONGAL  Cows are decorated, garlanded  Prayers are offered for the cows  Feed them with pongal and other food  Take them around for procession
