2. TIP # 5:
Weatherproof Silding
Glass Doors
Apply a self-adhesive foam compression weatherstripping to the edge of the doorjamb
of a sliding glass door. Now you have taken care of the edges. Unfortunately, the
broad expanse of glass that makes these doors so appealing also makes them
inefficient when it comes to energy. Good window treatments, such as insulated
shades or thermal film, can help.

3. TIP # 6:
Make sure Exterior
Doors Close Tightly
A door that doesn’t shut tightly can allow inside air to escape. Adjust the door latch
and strike plate on exterior doors to make sure they close as tightly as possible. Open
and close the door, and watch the action between the bolt on the door and the strike
plate, or catch, on the frame. If they are not aligned and working smoothly, try to
determine which part is causing the problem. If the strike plate needs to be higher,
drive 3-inch wood screws into the top of the doorjamb to pull up the door frame; if it
needs to be lower, drive the screws into the bottom of the jamb to pull the doorframe
down. If the problem appears to be with the latch bolt, remove the door and set it
aside. To raise the latch bolt, install thin cardboard shims behind the bottom hinge so it
raises the whole door. To lower the door and the latch bolt, install shims under the top
hinge.
Quick Tip:
Adding a storm door reduces drafts around the door and makes the area
more comfortable, but storm doors and their installation are expensive,
which makes the payback period comparatively long. Before investing in a
storm door, investigate prices and consult your energy suppliers regarding
the efficiency of a storm door in your climate.
