A pre-defined, standardised Windows desktop across the whole of Government based on the work we
have done with the US Federal Government Desktop Core Configuration. This approach will
significantly reduce the cost (outsourcer & IT staff/resources) and complexity of managing multiple
desktop configurations across Government.
Key Microsoft Play for Gov. Examples
•Potential in-year savings of £354m •US Air Force
•Based on 3m central Gov desktops: • £39 reduction/desktop/year
• PC Management £4m • Total £94m over 5 years
• App Virtualisation up to £300m • £10m power savings per year
(£30 per desktop potential saving) •City of Miami
• Multiple images £50m • 3.5k employees. £81k per year
Savings in future years savings from deployment of
•PC management £478m 5 years Win7
•Five year savings of circa £1,428m • £29k energy cost saving in year 1
Next steps
•Discussions with Cabinet Office are in place for Pan- Government Desktop
•How can we expedite refresh strategy with assistance around Standardisation and components such as Win7
•Engagement with SIs
