The Byzantine Empire and Islam
The Byzantine Empire
 The Roman Empire was divided by Teodosio in 395
A.D.
 (Eastern Roman Empire and Western Roman Empire)
 Eastern Roman Empire ( Byzantine Empire)
 Constantinople was the capital.
 It continued for more than one thousand years.
 The best era was in the five century with Justinian
‘the Great’ .
 The survival of the empire was caused by:
 An effective administration
 An armie which resisted lots of invasions (even the
Islam invasion)
 The Byzantine Empire was a cultural link between
East and West areas.
 The end of the empire was in 1534 by ottomano
turks.
The Islam
 The word “Islam” means submission to God.
 The Islam has origen in the arabig peninsula in VII
century.
 It is a monotheist religion created by “Mahoma”,
they believe in the god Allah.
 It had a quick expansion over east and west.
 The sacred book is the Koran, that was dictated by
Allah to Mahoma throught Gabriel archangel.
 According to the Vatican it is the most expanded
religion of the world.
The muslims´ sacred temple is the mosque,
and its parts are:
Islamic civilization´s charcateristics
 A prosper economy characterized by the existence
of many cities. Islam´s main coins are the dinar and
the derhim.
 The society was divided in two groups: Muslims and
Non-Muslims (Christians and Jewish).
 The polithic power was centralized in the caliph that
was helped by the vizier and the emir.
 In culture, muslims were transmittings of technical
and intellectual advances in medicine, astronomy,
mathematics and philosophy.
 The art was caracterized, in architecture, by the use
of arcs and a big decorative wealth. The sculpture
and the painting didn´t have much development.
Islam´s basic laws
 To believe in a unic god ( Allah) and in a unic
prophet (Mahoma).
 To pray five times a day in direction to “La Meca”.
 Don´t eat during the Ramadan´s month (during the
Sun is up).
 To give some money to the poor people.
 To go to “La Meca” minimum once a life.
 Don´t eat pork because it is an unpure animal for
them.

Islam´s main coins are the dinar and the derhim.  The society was divided in two groups: Muslims and Non-Muslims (Christians and Jewish).  The polithic power was centralized in the caliph that was helped by the vizier and the emir.  In culture, muslims were transmittings of technical and intellectual advances in medicine, astronomy, mathematics and philosophy.  The art was caracterized, in architecture, by the use of arcs and a big decorative wealth.
