Marilyn Monroe By Cecil BeatonThis is a photo that Cecil Beaton tookof Marilyn Monroe, he did a lot of workwith her. All of Cecil’s images are inblack and white. This image shows Marilyn Monroe layon a bed with various items aroundher. This picture was took in 1956 and itwas taken during a photographicsession at Ambassador Hotel in NewYork. By the time this photograph wastaken Marilyn Monroe had been amodel for 16 years and an actress for5.
CompositionWhen Cecil Beaton took this image ofMarilyn Monroe lay on a hotel bed hechose to go for a more classy image andfocused the camera more on the top halffrom the waist upwards so that the focuswas mainly on her face, her beauty.Cecil is usually known for having quiteunusual backgrounds but with this image itis quite plain I think this is as he didn’twant to take any of the focus on her away. There are quite unusual images next toher so it is not completely plain and thatcomes from the design that is on thebedding of the bed she is lay on.
Techniques usedCecil Beaton’s images alwaysfollow in the same kind of styleas when he is taking his imageshis main focus is the person inthem so he usually has them inthe centre of the image howeverwith this one he has used therule of thirds as Marilyn Monroeis slightly off being in the middleand more to one side this isbecause he focuses a little onthe background as well with theunusual images that are on thebed sheet.
Strengths & WeaknessesI like how Cecil Beaton focuses more on the model andusually always has them looking right into the camerarather than looking away, as it involves the audiencemore when the model is giving them direct eye contact.I have shown 3 images of his, my favorite is the middleimage where they have shown 3 images of the onemodel all in the same picture, one with direct eyecontact and that is the one that is right in the center ofthe picture then next to that there is 2 other images at theside and I think that is very effective image and looksgood. However a thing I don’t like about some of hisimages is when he does what is shown in the bottomimage where he focuses the attention more on thebackground rather than the model, but a lot of peopledo like this as he is well known for his unique backgroundstyles, but I just prefer when he focuses more on themodels face.
