" Two thirds of Calcutta's population live in the officially recognized slums the so-called Bustees. At a cost of around 2 dollars a month they live in primitive huts made out of clay, corrugated iron and old wooden boxes" (Wenk)
Calcutta is one of the many cities in the world where poverty is at its worst
Second of all Calcutta is India's Cultural Capital, "full of rich culture and opportunities" ("Service-Learning Program in Kolkata, India"). If many of the people are left in poverty, how will the culture pass on and spread, especially when they can't have children because they are too poor
Third of all, we found the great organization IPSL which works on poverty in Calcutta and co-operates with great Mother Teresa's Homes
Mother Theresa left her career in St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta to support ones suffering from poverty. What impression does her act have on you? What could have happened if Mother Theresa never helped the poor?
Poverty today is a global issue because it does not only affect certain area; it affects lots of people of all races all over the world.
People today are so poor that they have to live in substandard housing and drink unsafe drinking water
Disease spreads easier with the poor unable to afford medical bills and an education
Death from poverty weekly is among the hundreds of thousands
These people do not deserve this, it just comes to them
If poverty continues to spread in Calcutta, the cultural capital of India as stated before, devastating consequences can occur
The world will lose an unaccountable amount of precious history as the people are the ones who pass it on, and if they die without passing it down or cannot have children to pass it on, much will be lost
We need to stop this unjust and torment of human rights.
