  • What a doctor do Doctors make people healthier. When people get sick, doctors figure out why. They give people medicine and other kinds of treatment. They also give advice about diet, exercise, and sleep. Doctors use science to figure out what is making people sick.
  • What a doctor do Doctors examine people, listen to them describe their health problems, and do tests to see what is wrong. There are many kinds of doctors. Family and general practitioners are often the first doctors that people go to when they get sick. These doctors treat common problems. They also send patients to other doctors, called specialists. Specialists are experts in different types of health problems.

    What a doctor do
  • Doctor as a Career
    • A career in medicine offers doctors an opportunity to provide a service to the public through the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, diseases and infections. Doctors are also increasingly expected to provide social support to their patients.
    • Doctors are able to choose which area of medicine they practice in. This should suit their own personal aptitudes.
  • Doctor as a Career
    • There are a large number of specialty career paths in medicine - with over 50 career options available, a doctor is assured of finding a suitable career. The options may include becoming
    • a surgeon,
    • a general practitioner,
    • a geneticist, a psychiatrist,
    • a medical lecturer at medical school,
    • a medical researcher or a public health physician to name a few.
  • Doctor as a Career
    • The majority of doctors work within the NHS, opportunities exist in other settings, such as the armed forces, the Home Office working as a police surgeon, or a prison doctor, and many others.
    • Medicine is a rewarding career; however, being a doctor involves a lifetime of learning, both formally and informally.
  • Doctor as a Career
    • Doctors have to update their knowledge and skills throughout their careers. In terms of the training period, it can take up to 12 years to progress within structured training - from studying medicine at undergraduate level to being appointed as a senior doctor (hospital consultant).
    • After graduation from medical schools, doctors undertake what is seen as an 'apprenticeship'. In simple terms, this means that you learn more about medical practice 'on the job' - whilst actually practicing it within your level of competency, knowledge and skills.
    • This is usually in the hospital or community setting. This 'apprenticeship' begins at the pre-registration house officer grade and continues until you become a consultant or a general practitioner.
    Doctor as a Career
    • Whilst the working conditions for doctors in general are improving and their hours have been reduced, it should be recognized that doctors as professional people do work relatively long hours and will be expected to be on-call at times.
    • In addition, doctors in the training grades are usually studying for their specialty exams throughout this training period and this can be demanding and time consuming.
    Doctor as a Career
  • REQUIREMENTS TO BE A DOCTOR

  • JOB OPPORTUNITIES
    • General and multi speciality hospitals - both the government hospitals and corporate hospitals
    • Specialty hospitals and critical care centers which treat patients with emergency and multiple health problems, injuries, etc.
    • Polyclinics and specialty clinics

    • Nursing homes
    • Medical Colleges, which offer courses like MBBS, MD, MS, DM, M.Ch., etc.

    • Pharmaceutical companies in their sales support functions, medical documentation function, or as an advisor in the Medical Advisory Board after you have 4-5 years of experience.
    • A doctor's responsibility is not limited to treating and caring for ill patients and preventing disease, but also to be a source of support for clients and their families.
    • A doctor's job is by no means easy. For many years you could be required to work long hours with little break at the weekends, even for a general practitioner.
    • If you set up your own clinic, you might need to work extra hours to attract more customers to consult you instead of some other doctors.
    Why to Choose Doctor Job
  • You work as a general practitioner or train to be a specialist in private clinics or within private and public hospitals as well as healthcare organizations. Specializations take many years of practice and examinations but it is worth it if you are passionate about a certain field. Why to Choose Doctor Job

  • How much does this job pay? Of all jobs, being a doctor usually pays the most money. The Medical Group Management Association's Physician Compensation and Production Survey says that most doctors earned between $132,953 and $321,686 in 2005. How much they earned depended on how long they had been doctors and where they lived. It also depended on how many hours they worked and how good a doctor they were. And it depended on what kind of doctor they were—specialists usually made more than general practitioners.
  • Chart of salary
  • BLS expects the number of jobs for physicians to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016. This is partly because new machines and tools are letting doctors treat more health problems. And it is partly because people are living longer and need more healthcare. Job opportunities for doctors are expected to be good, especially in rural and low-income areas. Some of these areas do not have enough doctors. What about the future?
  • Contemporary medicine is challenging, exciting and dynamic. Countless new discoveries are making their impact on medical practice, and doctors now qualifying will see even more dramatic changes in the future, with the development of many new therapies, involving not only drugs, but also treatments arising from research in electronics, nuclear physics, genetics and molecular biology. So, you are interested in becoming a doctor?
