Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. This temperature rise is caused by the Greenhouse effect -- a necessary phenomenon that keeps all Earth's heat from escaping to the outer atmosphere.
Without the natural greenhouse effect it is certain that life on Earth would be difficult to sustain. However, too many greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere would lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of negative impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans.
Characteristics of three major greenhouse gases Greenhouse gas Sources Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) 1) Burning of fossil fuel 2) Land-use change (deforestation) Methane (CH 4 ) 1) Biomass burning 2) Enteric fermentation 3) Rice paddies Nitrous Oxide (N 2 O) 1) Biomass burning 2) Fossil-fuel combustion 3) Fertilizers
