From these answers I can see that we established our genre well and clearly illustrated who the main characters where and what type of people they were, however we could have given a wider more actuate sense of detail when trying to make it clear what the roles of the characters were. This however could be revealed in the rest of the movie and at this point may have created a sense of mystery and question for the opening sequence. <br />

  15. 15. “Zombie shot worked very well and was interesting” </li></li></ul><li>Introduction<br />For our media coursework our objective was to create the opening sequence of a film lasting approximately two minutes. <br />Our project is a 2 minuet and 25 second opening sequence of a zombie horror/thriller film named un-natural selection. <br />The narrative follows the protagonist as he wakes up in a cellar appearing to be slightly dunk, injured and weak.  After wondering outside aimlessly, a creature starts following him. And eventually takes a hold of him but the protagonist beats the creature with a stick. Cut to the title: Un-natural Selection, and it ends here.Everything we created was to be entirely original, attention grabbing and different and we made it clear enough that our genre was thriller (proven by our survey). <br />During the project I worked with Dan and MegWe all contributed equally with filming, <br />organizing props times, locations <br />and giving ideas. <br />My particular contribution was being the main protagonist, we felt that someone within our group would be reliable and have a better understanding of our film and how we wanted the main protagonist to act.<br />I also contributed well with thinking of alternative ideas for props, type of shots, how I should act and some events that could unfold in the film. i.e. being stalked by the zombie and never seeing its face.<br />

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products <br />The genre of our film is a zombie thriller. <br />We have used many conventionsof thrillers.<br />Mystery, (not knowing what the creature looks like and what happened after he hit it with the stick).<br />Of stalking ( the zombie following the protagonist). <br />Of death (as it is apparent there is no human life left other than the protagonist.) There is also typical Conventions of a good guy (the protagonist) and the bad guy (the zombie). <br />It is vital to use typical elements of thrillers to clearly establish the genre, appealing to the audience, making it exciting to watch and ultimately making more people watch it and enjoy it. We followed the typical elements but tried to make it original and different, in our case we made it so the audience never saw the zombie. So the audience are surprised, curious and so its not just another typical zombie movie. I think we made it original as we used our creativity and innovations well and as widely as possible, to make every second interesting, not confusing, and allowing room for enigmas. <br />We thought that our ideas would be successful as they create mystery and suspense leaving the audience with a interesting cliff hanger. My studies show positive feetdback as the audience liked the idea of zombie vision in first person and the cliffhanger. <br />

How does your media product represent particular social groups.<br /><ul><li>There are only 3 characters (and a dog) that are represented in the film. </li></ul>The most social group represented is young men, <br />The main character, A young man.<br />The most stereotypical view of young men are to be quite rebellious, emotionless,<br />strong, beer-loving, cunning, sometimes foolish, adrenaline filled and <br />running of testosterone. Our character is seen as strong minded, lonely, slightly drunk, at one point scared, <br />but then he finds his courage and fights for his life. <br />Costume:His appearance isn't a sight for sore eyes as he's run down which is apparent through the<br />way he’s dressed. His clothes are wripped, damaged and un-kept. He appears to have once been some type of businessman. His hat creates a image of mystery and seriousness. <br />Appearance and actions:<br />He is presented as run down and injured as he walks with a limp and a drunken swagger, he has a beard and is covered in dirt, suggesting he has been the way he is for quite some time, but his hair is quite short showing his situation hasn’t been apparent for more than a few months. He walks and acts like he is weak and struggling to stand up, trying to gain support of nearby trees and failing to safely walk down a hill. However he finds his inner strength when defeating the zombie stalking him. <br />Speech: <br />Our main character doesn't speak, as he has no one to talk to enforcing the image of him being on his own. He is also strong minded, hence why he doesn't talk to himself. <br />

The second character, A zombie. <br />A stereotypical view of a zombie, is to be dead, in an entranced like state, blood and gut<br />Loving, seeking to eat everything that’s alive, with torn rotting flesh, <br />and bleeding to undeath. <br />Our zombie is presented as a mysterious creature, you can tell of its deadlike<br />entranced state due to the sound it makes or grunting, heavy breathing, moaning, and the way it moves. Also its red blurred ghost mimicking vision is a big give away that it’s a zombie, <br />There are no visual signs of it physique or costume as its only presented in first person but we thought<br /> not seeing it and only seeing its vision created tension and mystery. <br />A stereotypical view of a teenager is a moody adolescent, who's rebellious, <br />dressed in tracksuits or jeans like everyone else, blocked out from the world, spotty rude and greasy. <br />Our teenager is represented in a flashback, being joyful, happy playing with his dog, condescending to the typical view <br />But then we learn he’s dead. <br />However he is dressed in jeans and with long greasy hair, has an attempted stubble. <br />Our representations of the characters were produced successfully and establishes the equilibrium clearly, as the audience recognized them and responded to them positively. <br />

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?<br />A popular media institution in close association with scary films, horrors, thrillers and zombies is DNA films.<br />If we contacted this media institution with our ideas and opening sequence they might consider allowing us to disribute our product as they have been involved with other films of similarity like 28 days later and 28 weeks later, highly rated zombie films. <br />Our film isn't so much a horror like 28 days later but more on the thriller side of zombies, this may appeal to DNA films as its unique and interesting!<br />
  20. 20. Who would be the audience for your media product? <br /><ul><li>Our film is a zombie thriller, intended to give mystery, excitement and a scare to the viewer. Our film is aimed at a target audience of both male and females, of a western origin, and an age range of 16-25 year olds.
  21. 21. The social economic status of the audience will be from group D of lower working class to group B of middle class. Obviously the film will be aimed at people who enjoy and have an interest in zombie apocalypse movies, with the typical connotations of death, survival, tragedy and possibly love. The audience will experience a thrill of excitement terror and enjoy many enigmatic elements.

These are good target audiences to aim at as there is a wide range of people who fall into these categories, optimising the most out of the gross income from the movie as many tickets will be sold to watch it, the social class of people aimed to watch the movie will be able to afford the ticket prices, however these social classes may choose to use piracy to watch the film, reducing our potential profits, on the other hand every media product faces this threat.
  23. 23. We are unlikely to aim at any other target audiences as our aim has quite a large range. Maybe people of 25-50’s may choose to watch the film for a thrill and excitement, the older boundary may be persuaded by their younger sons/ daughters to watch the movie.

After questioning the target audience positive feedback shows they enjoyed the opening sequence, found it interesting, and liked the ideas we had, as well as the images created, pace of the screen, shots we took and the overall equilibrium.</li></li></ul><li>How did you attract / address the target audience?<br />An opening scene to a movie is the crucial point at which the plot, genre and equilibrium are set up, the first impressions of the first 2 minuets of a movie can mean the difference between a viewer loving or hating a movie. They can even walk out and demand their money back, telling their friends its shocking and losing the movie money. By making a great opening scene, the viewer may tell people they loved it and understood it well, maybe going to watch it again.<br />We needed the audience to understand the plot, characters and settings strait away <br />We successfully did this by making our movie clear and concise, quickly establishing our equilibrium, genre, as well as introducing the main character’(s). We also had to give variety and a unique feel to the movie to attract the audience and excite them. <br />Our audiences positive feedback shows we did this successfully, through them saying the movie was clear and that they understood it well. And they had clear knowledge what the main character was doing and that it was a zombie following him.<br />
  25. 25. We kept the chronological order of the film simple but we did spice the time up by having a flashback! We used enigmas to set up elements we wanted the audience to see, such as the main character being alone and injured, that the world was deserted, and the fact a zombie was following him. We made it clear that a zombie was following him by using narrative devices like voice overs of zombie noises. We successfully set up enigmas and elements through the shots we delivered, the location and the correct editing. Hopefully the enigmas we created would drive the audience to watch the rest of the film. We created clear binary opposites to contrast the good guy (the survivor) and the bad guy (the zombie) sticking with typical elements to attract the audience and making the film easy to follow. We built tension and suspense through the zombie, by it stalking the survivor and the audience never seeing what it looks like. <br />

Through using the equipment for the beginning of the movie I learned how to use a video camera, take different shots, edit software, edit video, how to embed information and videos, use a blogging sight, record sounds, make graphs, and ultimately the fundamental basics to making a movie. <br />The technologies I used were only of student class, which I have no problem with as we used them well and made the most out of them, but if we were to improve our movie it would be desired that we have professional equipment as well as full knowledge of how to use them. <br />With our equipment's we have managed to create a variety of enigmas, like establishing who the main characters are, what their purpose is, the locations, the genre and pace of the film, we even managed to create “zombie vision”. <br />Things we changed and altered was making the movie have a bit more pace towards the end, giving it more action and tension. <br />

Looking back at your preminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?<br />Our original preliminary is slow paced with little action, its quite boring and doesn't establish much of an equilibrium, the plot and the genre is not clear. <br />Our movie now have varied paces, with action, establishes a plot, genre and its clear. <br />My questioned audience suggested we could improve our movie further, <br />by seeing the zombie in costume, filming the survivor in a deserted city, involving more zombies. However they also said its much more interesting than our initial designs. <br />Out technique could be improved by using better composition of shots, better smoothness of editing and transitions, using a better choice of elements to tell a better story, create a better choice of lighting, involve some language, and more interesting costumes and locations. <br />
  30. 30. Conclusion<br />I feel that our movie was a success, it established the equilibrium, genre and the miseen scene well. The questioned audience showed they enjoyed it and they understood it, however there could be a few improvements. <br />Particular aspects I like about the movie is the zombies first person view, and how you cant see it, also how the opening sequence ends in a cliff hanger. <br />Aspects that could be improved are the number of zombies, locations, props and the equipment available. <br />I think our movie could be potentially distributed to producers as its unique, interesting and also has popular elements that are attractive to the audience. <br />
