As we are planning to do a teaser trailer for a horror film, we have to think about the age range and target audience as there may be scenes of which wouldn't be suitable for certain ages. In a previous post we explained on how the teaser trailers for, 'Paranormal Activity 2' and 'The Last Exorcism' were good examples of the sort of story line we would like to do and so looking at their target audience would be important.
Paranormal Activity 2 - The certificate for this film is a 15 as it contains scenes of violence and disturbing language. As the age is 15+ this also tells us that the target audience is of that age range and mainly people who enjoy horrors and being scared.
The Last Exorcism - The certificate for this film is an 18 as it does contain disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material. Due to the film being an 18, the film was made for an audience 18+ and as well as Paranormal Activity 2 is also for people who enjoy horrors and also who are interested in a different style of horror as it is in a documentary style.
Both these films are quite similar as they both follow the needs for their target audience; they both have tense situations and a sense of fear, which to the audiences cause a thrill. The films are both targeted at a young teenage age as the institution know that teenagers enjoy horror.
As we chose to use disturbing violence in our teaser trailer we have chosen to make it a certificate 15. Our target audience is people who enjoy being scared and also find it interesting of some sort. Our audience will be at an age of 15 to 30 because we believe at this age people go to the cinema with their friends and the cinema is a hobby of theres and this film would be one of their belonging needs.Our film would be targeted at a mainstream audience as we believe it would be a popular film.The way in which we chose our audience is through the GRASS method;
