James Mulholland Evalution

 1. 1. Evalution By James Mulholland
 2. 2. Introduction

For my project I created a music magazine front cover , contents page and double page spread. This is the end product of my work.

 3. 3.

The genre of my magazine is Indie. It has the title of Indie express and on the front cover the artist has a guitar and these two points immediately suggest that the genre that the magazine focuses on the Indie genre. It makes it clear to someone if they quickly look at it they will know straight away the genre of the magazine.

 4. 4.

From the double page article features that suggest the genre is indie are that the name of the magazine is at the bottom. The pictures of the artist with a guitar also suggest this. The context within the text suggest that the genre is indie as well because they talk about things such as other indie bands

 5. 5.

From the contents page other pointers that the genre is Indie are that the bands in the contents are established Indie bands which if people knew the bands they would know it was indie. Also the title is featured at the top of the page again.

 6. 6.

My magazine is slightly similar to some of the others in this genre but has several features that make it unique. First of all the colour scheme is unique because it isn't used by any other magazines and that makes it stand out. Also my magazine is focused on the smaller bands but they also feature on the popular bands as well. One of the features of my magazine is called the new music radar which is specifically focused on new bands. This makes the magazine unique because not many magazines do this and it makes it more interesting than every magazine being similar.

 7. 7. Conventions Used

For the front cover the conventions that I have used are that there is one dominant image which I the case with most music magazines. Also the use of the use of barcode, price, date and issue number are essential with magazines and I used them all on the front cover. Also the text related to the image is the largest because it is the most important story. The title dominates the page but the image is placed in front signifying the importance of the artist. Also the use of page numbers in the magazine which is one of the most important features.

 8. 8. Innovations

My innovations are likely to prove successful because it is unique and the chances that people will buy it are higher because it is different from the rest of the magazines. Also the colour scheme of the magazine makes it more appealing than plain colours and again it makes it stand out because most magazines in this genre use red, black and white.

 9. 9. Innovation effectiveness

From my feedback my innovations proved to have been successful, the colour scheme probably proving most successful to my audience. However some of them were not as effective , so if I was to change anything I would use the audience feedback and alter some things slightly.

 10. 10. Institution

I think the media institution that I would choose to produce my magazine would be IPC Media. They produce NME which is probably the most successful magazine in this field and it would be a good option as they are reliable and can reach a wide audience.

 11. 11. Representation

The artist that I have used is young and a male and can represent that particular group. The artist in the magazine is dressed casually and can be typical of a lot of people in this particular social group. However the type of music, the style of clothes, hairstyle etc., do not represent all people of this age range and gender. For example the stereotypical “chav”,”emo” etc. wouldn’t dress this way or listen to that music.

 12. 12. Addressing the audience

There were lots of factors that attracted/addressed my audience. First of all the title indicates that the genre is Indie and that will attract a certain niche group. Also the image on the front shows a guitar which is used in this genre all the time so it again just addresses the reader towards what genre it is. The names of the bands on the front cover and the contents have a large fan base so that increases the amount of people that will be interested in the magazine if they are featured inside. Also I put on things that make the magazine sound exclusive and special such as free poster pull-outs, the used of the word exclusive etc… they all entice the reader because they it makes them feel like they are getting something special. Also the language that I have used complies with the genre of the magazine because they use this style which is mainly formal but uses quite a bit of slang as well.

 13. 13. Technology

I have used a lot of technology in the process of constructing my project. First of all my research was done on the internet and the blog I used was made on blogger. It was useful because I could write documents and place them on the blog and use scribd to put some documents on, I could put power points on via slide share and place images on as well. For the practical task I used InDesign to design the magazine and I used Photoshop to edit images by cropping them, changing the lighting etc… Also when I printed out my questionnaire I used a printer. Another technology that I used was a camera, which used to take the photos for my front cover and then imported it to the computer and then edited them on Photoshop, placed them on the magazine by using InDesign and then placed the magazine on the blog.
