What’s Available
Demographic Data (Available at County, Zip, Tract, and Block Group)
2000 Census Data
Census 2000 data is provided by the Census Bureau for standard geographic areas. Updated decennially, it includes more than 1,000 variables
such as:
Population by age Journey to work
Population by sex Marital status
Home value
Population by race
Population by income
Updated Demographics (2007, 2008, 2012, 2013)
Updated Demographics provides the most accurate current‐year and five‐year projection updates for U.S. demographics. The annual updates include
information about population, households, housing, occupancy, income, age, race, Hispanic origin, and more. ESRI demographics include 11,000 variables
grouped into categories such as Population by age, sex, and race, Household occupancy, income, and size.
Poverty (2007)
Provides population figures in relation to the Federal Poverty Income Level. Poverty rate provided for 50%, 100%, 150%, 185%, and 200%.
Tapestry Segmentation (2007)
Tapestry Segmentation, ESRI's market segmentation system, classifies U.S. neighborhoods into 65 segments [PDF] based on their socioeconomic and
demographic composition [PDF]. For a broader view of markets, segments are divided into 12 LifeMode Summary Groups that reflect lifestyle/life stage and
into 11 Urbanization Summary Groups that show levels of affluence and population density.
Consumer Spending (2007)
Consumer Spending is updated annually and is composed of more than 730 items in 15 categories such as
Automotive aftermarket
Financial
House and home
Household budget
Medical
Recreation
Retail goods and services
The data includes total expenditures, average spending per household, and a spending potential index (SPI). You can use ESRI’s Consumer Spending data to
identify changes and trends in consumer spending patterns and learn where to best market your products and services.
Market Potential (2008)
Market Potential is updated annually and measures the probable demand for a product or service in a defined geographic area. More than 2,000 items
from the 2008 Doublebase consumer survey conducted by Mediamark Research Inc. are grouped into 35 categories of goods, services, and attitudes.
The database also includes the expected number of consumers and a Market Potential Index (MPI) that measures the likelihood that adult households in a
specified area will exhibit certain consumer behaviors compared to the U.S. national average.
Many of the Market Potential indicators relate to Risk and Protective Factors such as community involvement and church affiliation.

Available Services
Pre‐made mapping of currently available statistical information. ARMS can take data that is already available and publish
maps. Often this not only reduces the workload of the agency, but also allows more detailed maps and improved quality.
For example, DHR provides Food Stamp information on their web site by county, but through ARMS allows users to see that
information at the Zip Code level.
ARMS can publish statistical information on the ARMS Map Server. This allows the agency and/or users to view this
information in context with other statistical information and available resources. For example, you can see how the location
of hospitals corresponds to Medicaid expenses.
ARMS can publish grant information. ARMS can map the location of grant recipients so Legislators or others interested can
see the distribution of grants in an area. This also allows the location of grants to be seen in correspondence to
demographic or statistical data. For example, Children’s Trust Fund grant recipients can be seen by their relationship to
poverty.
ARMS can create custom reports for grant applicants to use when applying for state funds. ARMS can take the demographic
portion of an RFP and create an automated report that allows applicants to gather community information in seconds
rather than hours. This provides a consistent source of demographic data that can be used for application evaluation and
allows applicants a more equal playing field.
ARMS can create custom dashboards to track performance measures. ARMS can create password protected monthly
reports that keep decision makers abreast of client demographics and performance measures. This near real time access to
information can increase performance and early awareness of trends. ARMS has been recognized for creating tools that are
both powerful and easy to use. For example, ARMS provides a Juvenile Delinquency Monthly Report for Juvenile Judges and
Probation Officers that explores the demographics of court referrals and analysis of crime trends.
ARMS can consult with agencies to complete custom analysis of clients. Utilizing ARMS data and analytical tools ARMS staff
can work with an agency to complete a confidential analysis of existing data that the agency can use to assess service
delivery.
