Project Description <ul><li>Title of Project: Cultural Diversity </li></ul><ul><li>Grade Level: 4 </li></ul><ul><li>Duration: Three 40 minute lessons </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To familiarize students with cultural differences and similarities. Cultural diversity is a topic that has become very important for all age groups to be aware of and to understand. Introducing children to the practices of different cultures at a young age will help them to be more comfortable with people of these cultures. This lesson will focus on Native American Indians and the Turkish. </li></ul></ul>

Task & Timeline of Activities <ul><li>This unit will consist of three days of lessons that focus on the Native American Indian & Turkish cultures. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will: </li></ul><ul><li>Day #1: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>View teacher prepared voicethreads </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Gather information about flags that represent their family </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Day #2 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Enter information on wiki </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Read informational packets on Native American Indians and Turks </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Day #3: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Peruse websites for information on given aspects of Native American and Turkish cultures </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Contribute audio responses to voicethreads </li></ul></ul>

Procedures <ul><li>Day #1 : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will view teacher prepared voicethread focusing on the flags that represent different countries. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teacher will point out the flags that represent the countries that her family came from. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teacher lead discussion on how colors & symbols on these flags represent different things. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Comparison drawn between the differnces and similarities in flags to those between cultures. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Homework Assignment : </li></ul><ul><li>Students will talk with parents to find out what countries their families come from. Students will go online and use wikipedia.com, brainpop.com,infobits.com, etc. to research these flags and to determine what the colors and symbols represent </li></ul>

Procedures Continued <ul><li>Day #2 : </li></ul><ul><li>-Student will be taken to the computer lab where each will be instructed to enter their findings about the flags that represent their families on a teacher prepared wiki. </li></ul><ul><li>- Students will be given two information packets. One on Native American Indian and one on Turkish culture. </li></ul><ul><li>-Teacher lead discussion on these two cultures. </li></ul><ul><li>Homework Assignment: </li></ul><ul><li>Students will read packets and complete worksheet outlining the similarities and differences between cultures. </li></ul>

Procedures Continued <ul><li>Day #3 : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will be taken to computer lab and will be divided up into groups of 4 or 5 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>They will be given a list of websitess to use and 20 minutes in their groups to find out as much information as they can about the dress, traditions, art and jewelry of the Native American & Turkish cultures </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teacher presentation of voicethreads demonstrating these characteristics of Native American Indian & Turkish cultures </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Homework Assignment: </li></ul><ul><li>Students will add their own audio on voicethread which is posted to the class wiki. Their responses should include information they have gathered over the past few days and should be accurate and original (not duplicating the response of a classmate) </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>
