    • Alluvial SoilFound: Northern Plains , Deltas formed bythe rivers of Deccan Plateau.Characteristics: This soil is very fertile.Crops Grown: Groundnut ,Wheat, Sugarcane, Rice, Pulses, Oilseeds andJute
    • Red SoilFound: Southern PlateauCharacteristics: It is red in colour and it isnot as fertile as Black soil.Crops Grown: Jowar , Bajra and Groundnut.
    • Black SoilFound: Central and North western regionsof Southern Plateau.Characteristics: It is made of lava.Crops Grown: Cotton and Sugarcane
    • Laterite SoilFound: Western Ghats and parts of TamilNadu, Kerala and KarnatakaCharacteristics: It is red in colour.Crops Grown: Coffee, Tea, Spices, coconutand rubber
    • Dessert SoilFound: Rajasthan and parts of GujaratCharacteristics: It is sandy and can notretain water. Hence it is not fertile.Crops Grown: None
    • Mountain SoilFound: Himalayan Region and in north-eastern parts of the countryCharacteristics: This soil is very rich inremains of plants and animals called humus.Crops Grown: Fruits likeapple, pear, peach, plum etc…
