  • 1. Classifying Quadrilaterals Math 2 Lowell Middle School Mrs. MacDermaid
  • 2. Quadrilateral • A quadrilateral is a four-side polygon.
  • 3. Special Quadrilaterals • Parallelogram • Rectangle • Rhombus • Square • Trapezoid
  • 4. Parallelogram • Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and congruent. Both pairs of opposite angels are congruent.
  • 5. Rectangle • Parallelogram with four right angles.
  • 6. Rhombus • Parallelogram with four congruent sides
  • 7. Square • Parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right angles.
  • 8. Trapezoid • Exactly one pair of opposite sides is parallel.
  • 9. Classifying Quadrilaterals • Quadrilaterals can have more than one name because the special quadrilaterals sometimes share properties. • The best name is the one that is the most specific.
  • 10. How the Quadrilaterals are Related (Venn Diagram) Parallelograms Squares Rectangles Rhombuses Quadrilaterals Trapezoids

  • 12. Try This! • Give all the names that apply to each quadrilateral. Then give the name that best describes it.
  • 13. Try This! • Give all the names that apply to each quadrilateral. Then give the name that best describes it. • The figures has opposite sides that are parallel so it is a parallelogram. • The figures has four right angles, so it is a rectangle. • Rectangle is more specific so it is the best name.
  • 14. Try This! • Give all the names that apply to each quadrilateral. Then give the name that best describes it.
  • 15. Try This! • Give all the names that apply to each quadrilateral. Then give the name that best describes it. • The figures has exactly one pair of opposite sides that is parallel, so it is a trapezoid.. • Trapezoid is the name that best describes this quadrilateral.
