Session outline <ul><li>General resources available through the SLV </li></ul><ul><li>Education resources available through the SLV </li></ul><ul><li>Using SLV collections to create a Web 2.0 activity </li></ul>These resources can be used for your own professional development as well as being shared with colleagues and students

General resources available through SLV <ul><li>catalogue: </li></ul><ul><li>most of our collection listed online, containing many digitised resources </li></ul><ul><li>information databases: </li></ul><ul><li>free remote access for registered library users to search journals and magazines </li></ul><ul><li>newspapers: </li></ul><ul><li>digitised newspapers, historical and contemporary </li></ul>
  4. 4. SLV catalogue The Library’s collections can be searched through the ‘Search’ box on most pages of the website: For advanced searches, you can access the main catalogue search page at: http://search.slv.vic.gov.au
  5. 5. Information databases The Library subscribes to a number of information databases and provides free remote access for registered library users. To log on, just enter your surname and the barcode from your Library card. To join the Library, visit: http:// www.slv.vic.gov.au /services/join-library
  6. 6. Information databases Information databases can be searched through the ‘Article databases’ tab in the main catalogue, or through: http://buddynew.slv.vic.gov.au/cgi-bin/buddy/slv They provide good reference materials for teachers looking to extend their own professional learning
  7. 7. Newspapers The Library also has many digitised newspapers available online. Historical titles (The Argus, Camperdown Chronicle) are available through the National Library of Australia at: http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ To do a more extensive search of the collections of Australian libraries, try Trove: http://trove.nla.gov.au/

Newspapers More contemporary titles can be found through the Library’s A-Z listing of eJournals and newspapers at: http://getit.slv.vic.gov.au/sfxlcl3/az Many of these are available through: <ul><li>Press Display (full digitised version, but most recent 2 months only) </li></ul><ul><li>or </li></ul><ul><li>Newsbank (back to 1999 but in text-only format) </li></ul>
  9. 9. Newspapers To access Press Display, search for your title on the eJournals and Newspapers page. Choose ‘Press Display’ where it offers options for ‘Full text available online. You can then search within the service using the search box at the top of the page:

Education resources from the SLV The Library’s Education team have developed a number of online education resources available at: http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/learn/online-education-resources <ul><li>These include: </li></ul><ul><li>resource kits </li></ul><ul><li>digitised collection materials </li></ul><ul><li>websites </li></ul>

History and research resources can be found at: http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/learn/online-education-resources/history-resources They cover topics such as: Burke & Wills , Ned Kelly , Eureka and Medieval manuscripts .

  13. 13. Online education resources Centre for Youth Literature sites: insideadog : http://www.insideadog.com.au/ Contains book reviews, news, sneak previews of upcoming books, a writer-in-residence blog, the chance to win stuff, a discussion forum and audio.

  15. 15. Using SLV collections in the classroom There are lots of ways to incorporate SLV resources into your teaching. This is an example activity called ‘My Early Melbourne’ that shows how you can use SLV collection items and a free Web 2.0 application to create a classroom activity.
  16. 16. My Early Melbourne Open the ‘My Early Melbourne picture list’ on your computer. Go to Zoho notebook at: http://notebook.zoho.com Login via Google using the following details: Username: myearlymelbourne33 (for September 1 st ) myearlymelbourne34 (September 15 th ) Password: slveducation (for both groups)

Making a Web 2.0 activity <ul><li>To build your own Web 2.0 activity: </li></ul><ul><li>gather images for your chosen topic – if you are using images from the SLV catalogue you can just right-click on them and choose ‘Save image as. . .’ </li></ul><ul><li>save them to a central folder and resize them if necessary (using your chosen image program – you can just use a simple one, like the software that comes with most digital cameras) </li></ul><ul><li>create a Google account at: https://www.google.com/accounts - this will allow you to sign into Zoho notebook without needing to enter your own email address </li></ul>

Making a Web 2.0 activity (cont’d) <ul><li>Go to Zoho Notebook at: http://notebook.zoho.com and choose </li></ul><ul><li>then enter your Google account username and </li></ul><ul><li>password. </li></ul><ul><li>Choose ‘Add image’ from the menu on the left </li></ul><ul><li>Click on the ‘Upload’ tab then upload images from the folder you have created </li></ul><ul><li>Create a ‘picture list’ as a Word document using these images and their bibliographic details </li></ul>

Making a Web 2.0 activity (cont’d) <ul><li>Give students the ‘picture list’ documents so they can choose the images they want to use in their notebook </li></ul><ul><li>Get students to log on as a group, using the same username and password that you have created, and the images that you have uploaded will all be there </li></ul><ul><li>Remember that students must rename their books when they log on to keep their work separate and saved in their name </li></ul><ul><li>Ask students to add images and then create text boxes to give further information about what the image contains </li></ul>
