This, however, is not the case with deer ticks. Eating: Ticks eat only the blood of warm blooded animals and humans. Females are much slower than males, eating on one host for a number of days. Once engorged, they lay their eggs then die. Hungr y ticks can live for up to two year s, in some cases, without eating. Habitats: Most types of ticks hide in grassy or wooded areas. Brown dog ticks, however, are indoor creatures, hiding in furniture, behind baseboards, and even under the edges of rugs. http://www.slugabug.com

Adult deer ticks can come out even in the snow if the temperature is above 40 degrees. Talk to your vet about tick prevention medication.  Protect your self with a tick repellent being sure to get your clothes and shoes. DEET & Duranon are the two most commonly used.  And dont forget about your yard.  Mow your lawn regularly. If you live near a wooded area, thin vegetation closest to your property.  Cut down any tall grass & keep overhanging shrubs & trees as short as possible.  Keep woodpiles well away from your home.  Clean up any foliage or clutter that might harbor pests or rodents.

Keep in mind that pest management depends highly on the season as well.  For deer ticks, treating them in May or early June is a must.  For American dog ticks, the spring is a good time to treat them.
