On April 24th, 2012 Google released their Penguin algorithm update, which decreased the search engine rankings of websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines through black-hat SEO techniques such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, participating in link schemes, deliberate creation of duplicate content, and others.

Penguin, combined with several updates to the Panda algorithm, continue to affect the SEO efforts of websites, including some who have not participated in black-hat techniques.

Join Slingshot SEO and Conductor as we discuss what has happened in the 90 days since Penguin went into effect, and what we can expect from future refreshes to the algorithm. Nathan and Brian will share some interesting data from Conductor, and Casey will join them to answer your questions about the recent Google updates.

  • By analyzing the groupings of how the ranks changed by bucketing the keywords into ranking buckets, we can get a bit of a sense for what the Google algorithm is doing with panda. What I want to point out here is that Page 3+ became 1-2, unranked did not. Google viewed their page 3+ stuff as rank worthy (not that unranked did something) and moved them into ranking positions in positions 1-2 and 3
  • Over opt: they included too many instances of core keywords on their siteDynamics of…: What do I mean by this? Dropped off page one into oblivion, not into Whats interesting here that I want to point out is that when keywords fell, didn’t fall from page 1 to page 2-3 (in the same way we saw kws move from 2-3 to page 1), when they fell Google said “youre out, youre not on page 2-3 you no longer rank, at least past page 10 which is what SL looks at” And so the takeaway for the search marketers on the phone with us might be that we consider whether we want to be even more conservative with our strategy, if theres anything in our strategy that’s even remotely gray we consider whether its worth the risk bc the penalties will be severe.
