Transcript

  • 1. TRACKING DOWNLOADED OER (or what Scott did on his month-long fellowship at the OU)
  • 2. MANY WAYS THAT MIGHT WORK
  • 3. WEB LOG ANALYSIS (only works for resources that stay on the original server)
  • 4. WEB SEARCH (Inaccurate, cumbersome data, only works on resources used in the open, doesn’t count views)
  • 5. COMMERCIAL APPROACHES (don’t actually solve this problem, are overly pushy, unpalatable to “Open” education)
  • 6. WEB BUGS Ah yes, that’s the ticket!
  • 7. FIRST PROBLEM Technical, how to implement it
  • 8. 2ND AND 3RD PROBLEMS Social - How to implement simple workflow; how to not alienate free/open content re-users
  • 9. THE SOLUTION (with thanks to Nick and Liam!)
  • 10. PIWIK open source web analytics package
  • 11. BC COMMONS LICENSE GENERATOR http://solr.bccampus.ca/bcc/BCcommons/publish/publish.html
  • 12. TAG (initially with a BC Commons, later also Creative Commons works)
  • 13. SCRIPT (crawls filesystem, looks for tag, calls Piwik API, generates tracking code)
  • 14. END USER DOWNLOAD
  • 15. TRACKING DATA RETURNED
  • 16. WHAT ABOUT THE JAVASCRIPT? Thanks to Nick, we have a nice workaround involving an image URL, an htaccess file and a script
  • 17. LOTS STILL TO DO
  • 18. HTTP://CLOUDWORKS.AC.UK/CLOUDSCAPE/VIEW/2150
