2. 2. Definition
Asexually transmitted disease (STD) is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexually_transmitted_disease
3. 3. Interesting Facts
Every 12 seconds, there is a new HIV infection worldwide.
Chlamydia is the most common curable sexually transmitted disease in the United States and in Canada.
Condoms are widely recommended for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Sources: http://www.worldvision.ca/About-Us/News-Centre/Pages/hiv-and-aids-statistics.aspx,
http://www.cdc.gov/std/chlamydia/stdfact-chlamydia.htm,
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/std/std4.shtml
10. 10. Summary
In 1999, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and Carribean were the two regions were the number of curable STDs per 1,000 population was the highest. North America, Western Europe and North Africa and Middle East were the three regions having about the same low number of population affected by curable STDs.
In the United States, between 2005 and 2009, there was an increase in the number of reported cases of Chlamydia.
11. 11. Summary
In 2009, in the United States, 80% of all reported cases of gonorrhea were diagnosed among people between the age of 10-29 years old.
In 2009, 33,3 millions of people were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. 2,5 millions (8%) of them were children.
12. 12. Summary
The correlation between the GDP per capita and the HIV/AIDS prevalence is negative and moderate. Therefore, the GDP per capita is not a variable closely linked with HIV/AIDS change.
The correlation between the literacy rates and the HIV/AIDS prevalence is negative and strong. Hence, the literacy rates is surely a variable linked to variations of HIV/AIDS infection.
