Editor's Notes
Hello and welcome everyone. I'm [Name], the [Title] for Novell. Over the next fifty minutes, I want to introduce you to Novell's collaboration strategy—and show you how our collaboration solutions can boost productivity, drive innovation and make it easier for your teams and employees to work as one.
We've got a lot of ground to cover in today's session. We're going to focus our discussion on the capabilities and technologies that Novell delivers to help you do more with less. We'll start by articulating the challenges that you and many organizations like you are facing, introduce the Novell solution framework that can help address these challenges, then dive into a brief presentation and demonstration of Novell Storage Manager and Novell SecureLogin.
What makes Storage Manager unique in the industry is that it is the only solution available today that manages storage based on Identity. Since Novell Storage Manager is tied to a user's identity, organizations can more effectively manage storage and address challenges related to data security, cost reduction, and improved productivity. Finally, since storage is tied to policies that are defined by the organization, they can support compliance with regulations around unstructured storage resources.
You then you have the directory service where a person’s identity and role within a company is maintained and managed such as Novell eDirectory.
This slide uses animation to show how storage might be provisioned and affected through a typical lifecycle.
Novell Storage Manager goes beyond provisioning storage to managing the complete lifecycle of storage based on identity and policy. Each one of the spokes on this wheel represents a manual process that Storage Manager automates. When you create a user in the directory, Novell Storage Manager provisions the user's personal and collaborate storage. I will not take the time right now to explain each of these since they will be covered in the remaining slides and demo. I would like to point out one in particular that most people identify with, which is Renames. Without Storage Manager in place, when you rename a user in the directory, you have to manually rename the user’s folder and also update the home directory attribute in the directory. If you fail to complete one of these steps, then the user can not log in and access their storage. Storage Manager automates this process, simply rename the user’s object in the directory and Storage Manager renames the user’s folder and re-sets the attribute in eDirectory. Possibly cover this if ACTION OBJECT slides are moved to Appendix There is one additional capability not represented on this slide. If you have Novell Identity Manager, you also have the ability to leverage a new feature known as the NSM Action Object. This allows you to leverage IDM Workflow Entitlements with approval processes to provision Exception Based Access to critical storage areas on your file servers. Please reference www.novell.com/storagemanager for more information on the Action Object.
Once the Engine reads the policy, it then delegates certain operations to the Agent. These operations include server to server file copies, file template copies as well as vaulting and grooming operations
Dynamic Storage Technologies provides: Automated policies to relocate infrequently used unstructured files to a low cost storage device Policies based on: Age of file Size of file File type File owner Merged view of information automatically provided for the end user Administrators can maintain separate backup/restore policies for frequently and infrequently used information Can partition files based on “need to backup” Primary area for “important” dynamic data Secondary area for “less–important” static data Can have different backup policies for each tree “ Important” data backed up more frequently Primary backups are smaller Primary backups run faster and use less storage (tape, etc.) Primary restores faster
Novell Storage Reporting provides: System-wide, identity based, reporting tools that allows administrators and executives to make informed decisions regarding their collaborative information Automated reporting on unstructured,.collaborative, data: What it is? Where it is? How large is? Who owns it? When it was last used? Directly track each piece of information back to the user based on their identity in the directory

As this figure shows, if Novell Storage Manager is deployed in the eDirectory or Active Directory environment, Enterprise Storage Reporting can also utilize Novell Storage Manager policies (point to the policies), which can be established as MSRs for scanning.
