  • 3. What is a roadblock to employment? <ul><li>Anything that makes it difficult for you to attain work or undertake job search. </li></ul><ul><li>Three main types: </li></ul><ul><li>Job search roadblocks </li></ul><ul><li>Employment roadblocks </li></ul><ul><li>Personal roadblocks </li></ul>
  • 4. Why do I need to address roadblocks? <ul><li>To help you stay in the hunt in obtaining employment </li></ul><ul><li>To make sure you are not excluded from a job because the employer has assumed there is a barrier such as a disability . </li></ul>
  • 5. Removing or detouring roadblocks <ul><li>Education – Studying at TAFE, Productivity Placement Programs, obtaining Driver’s Licence etc </li></ul><ul><li>Re-assessing your career path – Survival Job’s etc </li></ul><ul><li>Accessing services or information from other agencies </li></ul><ul><li>Analysing your perceptions and beliefs </li></ul>

Education <ul><li>What do you want to learn? </li></ul><ul><li>Who will recognise and value what you’ve learnt? </li></ul><ul><li>Who will train you? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Self directed </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Courses through TAFE </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Registered Training Organisations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(Productivity Placement Programs) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>An expert in the field </li></ul></ul><ul><li>How do you want to learn it? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Auditory (listening) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Visual (seeing) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Hands on (doing). </li></ul></ul>
  • 7. Self-marketing strategy <ul><li>How do you present to employers? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>in print, over the phone and in person </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Are you prepared to answer the tough questions? </li></ul><ul><li>How do others describe you? </li></ul>
  • 8. Prepared answers need to... <ul><li>Alleviate the employer’s concern’s hiring you </li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrate that you ‘fit’ their hiring criteria </li></ul><ul><li>Increase your self-confidence </li></ul>
  • 9. Transport Barriers in regards to obtaining and maintaining employment <ul><li>Discuss with Centrelink about your eligibility for a Mobility Allowance or Taxi Subsidy Scheme </li></ul><ul><li>Seek Public Transport Assistance from Transinfo on 13 12 30 or transinfo.qld.gov.au </li></ul><ul><li>Transport Assistance provided by family members or friends </li></ul><ul><li>Transport assistance provided by your Employment Consultant or other staff from Catalyst for employer meetings or job interviews </li></ul>

Re-evaluating your career plan <ul><li>A survival job provides you with money and skills that will help you to obtain your ideal job </li></ul><ul><li>It is NOT about changing your ideal job </li></ul>Change your career plan by looking at more realistic job opportunities that you can undertake now or in the near future
  • 12. Summary <ul><li>Everyone has barriers to employment. </li></ul><ul><li>A barrier is a ‘red flag’ which identifies an area of concern for employers. </li></ul><ul><li>Without addressing barriers you run the risk of being ‘screened out’ rather than ‘screened in’. </li></ul><ul><li>Complete the “identifying barriers” </li></ul><ul><li> worksheet, and come up with </li></ul><ul><li>some solutions </li></ul><ul><li>If your not sure about how to address </li></ul><ul><li>the barrier, talk to your employment consultant </li></ul>
