  3. 3. What is Reiki? • A form of spiritual healing and spiritual practice used for the treatment of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual diseases • Practitioners use a technique similar to the laying on of hands, in which they claim to be channels for energy ("Ki") guided by a universal spirit or spiritual nature ("Rei") — flowing through their palms to heal a person wherever they may need healing www.nlitn.in 319 Mar 2014
  4. 4. What is Reiki? • Rei = Universal • Ki = Life Force Energy • Synonyms of Ki – Chi in China – Prana in India – Ka in Egypt – Holy Ghost in Bible – Orgon by Dr Reich – Pneuma in Greek…. • Reiki is two Japanese words, Rei and Ki (pronounced “Ray” and “Key”) • Rei means Universal • Ki means Energy --this energy is known • Therefore, Reiki means Universal Energy, the Vital Force that permeates the whole universe www.nlitn.in 419 Mar 2014

  13. 13. History of Reiki • In pre-patriarchal India, Lord Shiva brought it to this planet and encoded in human genes • Gautam the Buddha discovered it • Jesus the Christ was trained on it in Tibet • In late 1800 Dr Mikao Usui rediscovered form ancient sanskrit Tibetan Sutras • Dr Chijiro Hayashi became master in 1925 and initiated 13 Masters • Ms Hawayo Takata received for Mastership from Dr Hayashi in 1938 . • She trained 22 Reiki Masters in USA/ Canada • Paula Horan and William Rand did lot of work in India on Reiki and trained Masters. Dr Chijiro Hayashi Ms Hawayo Takata Dr Mikao Usuii Dr Paula Horan www.nlitn.in 1319 Mar 2014
  14. 14. 14 History of Reiki The history of how Reiki came to be starts with its creator, Dr. Mikao Usui. He was born on the 15th of August 1865 in the village of Taniai (now called Miyama cho) in the Yamagata county of the Gifu Prefecture in Japan. He was a Buddhist Priest and spiritualist. Being a descendent of the famous samurai warlord Toshitane Chiba, his family practiced martial arts, thus he too studied Aiki Jutsu. Not only being Buddhist, he was also influenced by his martial arts training, Shinto, Taoism, and Shugendo. In the early 1920’s he did a 21 day practice called ‘kushu shinren’ on Mt. Kurama Yama and it was during this process it is said he developed the Reiki system. "Usui did not see himself as a teacher. He made no claims for what he practiced - others approached him and asked to learn. That is how he was free to do as he did." www.nlitn.in19 Mar 2014
  15. 15. 15 History of Reiki (cont.) Thus, Reiki was born, but it wasn’t really called ‘Reiki’ originally, Reiki was just a term Dr. Usui used. What Usui Mikao taught was called 'Usui do' - 'the way of Usui', and what he practiced on people would most likely have been called 'Usui teate'- meaning 'hands-on'. Afterward he opened a clinic/school called the Gakkai and helped and healed many of the poor. He even aided Earthquake victims in 1923 and because of this word spread of his abilities as a healer. He was even awarded the Kun San To award by the Japanese government for his work with the earthquake victims. He died of a stroke in 1926 at the age of 62. He had two children with his wife Sadako Suzuki, Fuji and Toshiko. After his death, Mr. J. Ushida took over as president of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and erected a memorial stone at his grave site. Contrary to versions of the Reiki mythos, Chujiro Hayashi was not Dr. Usui’s successor to his school, but was a student of Usui’s and opened up a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and along came a woman named Hawayo Takata… www.nlitn.in19 Mar 2014
  16. 16. 16 History of Reiki (cont.) Hawayo Takata was visiting Japan from Hawaii to attend her sister’s funeral and had just been recently diagnosed with a series of health issues. Doctors had advised her she needed surgery to resolve them, but she had heard of Dr. Hayashi’s clinic and decided to get treated there instead. Over time she switched from patient to student and in 1938 she was initiated as a Master. She then went back to Hawaii and set up her own Reiki clinic with Dr. Hayashi and his daughter’s help. However, she didn’t initiate other Masters until 1970. From here she did several curious things in that she charged $10,000 for Master’s training, she didn’t allow her students to take notes or tape her as they had to memorize everything. Also after Dr. Hayashi died, she stated she was the only Reiki Master left in the world. She died in 1980. No one really knows why she did these things, but for a long time she was the West’s only source of information about Reiki and almost every Master from the West can trace their lineage back to her. www.nlitn.in19 Mar 2014
  17. 17. The Ethical Principles of Reiki Just for today, do not worry. Just for today, do not anger. Honor your parents, teachers, and elders. Earn your living honestly. Show gratitude to everything. Dr. Mikao Usui www.nlitn.in 1719 Mar 2014

  19. 19. How Reiki works -I • Inside every human being there is a subtle system of channels (nadis/meridians) and centers of energy (chakras) which look after our physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual being • Reiki flows through this system • Ida/Pingla/Sushumna are main Nadis for flow of Reiki Pingla Ida Sushumna (Manipura) www.nlitn.in 1919 Mar 2014
  20. 20. How Reiki works - II • All beings are given a spark of Ki at birth, which is stored in them for life • This Ki energy has its own force field, known as Aura, which has colours. • Along spine there are seven energy transformers in form of vortices known as Chakra • Flow of Reiki removes blocks and balances Chakras and increases Ki • Chakras impact Endocrine glands and which results in healing www.nlitn.in 2019 Mar 2014

  25. 25. Applications of Reiki • Physical Ailments Healing – Proximity – Distance • Emotional and Stress Healing • Goal Achievement • Relationship Issues • Abundance • Plants /Animal Healing • Healing the Earth • Spiritual Advancement www.nlitn.in 2519 Mar 2014
  26. 26. What Can Reiki Help Us Do? • Sense energy “blockages” • Clear an acupoint • Clear a meridian • Clear a chakra • Clear the aura • Speed up healing • Help calm, relax, reduce pain • Non-invasive help to body internals – Work on an organ or gland www.nlitn.in 2619 Mar 2014
  27. 27. Levels of Reiki Training • First Degree – for self and others proximity healing • Second Degree – Distance Healing • Third Degree – Master Healer • Fourth Degree – Master/Teacher • Fifth Degree – Grand Master www.nlitn.in 2719 Mar 2014
  28. 28. 1st Degree Reiki Attunement • First Degree introduces the learner to energy healing as well as Reiki history and practice. • First Degree teaches hand positions to allow Reiki to flow for self-healing and for healing others. • One can then heal one’s self, family, friends, as well as pets, plants and trees, even stuck machinery! www.nlitn.in 2819 Mar 2014
  29. 29. After your attunement… • The Reiki Master normally requests feed-back after an attunement. • Many people report seeing colours, smelling pleasant fragrances, hearing sounds, or experiencing calm. • It is also OK not to feel anything! (However, this may cause the candidate to wrongly feel that the attunement has not taken place.) www.nlitn.in 2919 Mar 2014
  30. 30. Reiki Attunement • Reiki in not taught but is transferred by a Reiki Master during an attunement process. • This P rocess opens the crown, heart and palm chakras and creates a special link with Reiki source. • The person receiving attunements become a Reiki Channel for one lifetime. • Reiki energy has intelligence of its own and flows automatically based on the requirement of the person receiving Reiki. www.nlitn.in 3019 Mar 2014
  31. 31. Reiki Attunement Process Basic Methodology 1. Decorate the Attunement Room. It should be separate from main Room : 2. Light the candle and Energize the room, especially in corners in CCW direction 3. Invite Reiki : • -Attitude of Gratitude ; “I thank Reiki, all the masters and ………….(own name)” • -Draw Symbols Master /HSJSN/SK/CKR (M123); • - Say “ Reiki , you are kindly invited to do the attunement of ……………….. for ……….Degree 4. Call the person while standing on left side of door and bow and bring him to chair without touching. 5. Tell the person to sit comfortable with feet flat on ground 6. Ask to fold hands in Namaskar mudra, close eyes and say “ Don’t open till I say so”, 7. Ask to take a deep breath. 8. Ask to relax. 9. Say “Thank you”…………………………………………………. Attunement chair Master Flower Candle Tibetan Bell www.nlitn.in 3119 Mar 2014
  32. 32. After Attunement • undertake a self-cleansing and self-healing for a period of at least 3 weeks, after each attunement • This is a very important step for your own benefit and I strongly advise you to do this • DO NOT rush through attunements www.nlitn.in 3219 Mar 2014
  33. 33. If you don’t feel anything … • A little reassurance from the Reiki Master will restore the faith of the candidate, and • that faith opens the channels for Reiki flow! • I can assure you from my own personal experience that attunements are ALWAYS successful • Reiki is an intelligent energy and ripens the ego carefully. So, • Be calm, be patient and have faith! www.nlitn.in 3319 Mar 2014
  34. 34. Is Reiki a panacea? • As you learn Reiki, you will come across many success stories, some really incredible. It is quite probable that all of them are true (the people who share them are absolutely sincere). • You will also learn that Reiki can cure health problems, past, present, future, relationships, monetary problems, career problems... contd... www.nlitn.in 3419 Mar 2014

  62. 62. Jyoshin Koki-ho Jyoshin Koki-ho (Joshin Kokyo-ho) is a breathing technique. You breathe Reiki in through the nose through the crown and into the hara on the in breath. You breath the out breath from the hara. Jyoshin Kokiho is done to cleanse the spirit, heart and mind. It is a focused meditative breathing technique. To do Jyoshin start by placing the hands in Gassho and your eyes closed. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. On the in breath, breathe in the light of Reiki through the crown and into the hara. Let the light fill your body completely, transmuting all that is negative and stuck, into light. On the out breath, breathe out that light and radiate it from you to all the universe. www.nlitn.in 6219 Mar 2014
  63. 63. 63 The Gassho Meditation Now that you have the hand positions and symbols down, I’m going to teach you a couple of meditations used in Reiki. The first is the Gassho meditation (its also just called ‘Gassho’) that was practiced every morning and evening by Dr. Usui and he called this the first pillar of Reiki. You can do it standing or sitting. •Close your eyes and fold your hands into a prayer position with your fingers pointing up and your thumbs touching your heart. •Focus all of your attention on the place where your middle fingers meet. •If thoughts arise, and they will, acknowledge them and then set them aside. If you loose focus, go back to focusing on your middle fingers. As you keep doing this you can keep your attention on your fingers for longer and longer without thoughts arising. •When finished, take a few deep breaths, bring your attention from your fingers to your eyes and then open your eyes slowly. www.nlitn.in19 Mar 2014
  64. 64. 64 Before you heal: Reiji-ho Reiji-ho means “indication of spirit” and is the second pillar of Reiki. You do this before you heal someone. • Do the Gassho meditation, but only for a moment or so. • Say a prayer giving thanks for Reiki and asking it to begin to flow now. • Say a prayer on behalf of your client, asking that they be completely healed. • Ask the spirit of Reiki to guide your hands to where they are needed. • Follow your inner guidance and allow your hands to be directed by the spirit of Reiki. Notice any impressions you may get over certain areas and use this to improve or target your treatments. www.nlitn.in19 Mar 2014
  65. 65. Jakikiri Joka-ho Jakikiri Joka-ho is a technique used to purify or transform negative energy. "Jaki" means negative energy and "kiri" means to cut. This technique is supposed to remove negative energy or vibratory problems from objects, purify them with Reiki vibrations and energy and to fill them with Reiki positive energy. It is taught that this technique should not be used with people. This is interesting as it is a common new age technique to "cut cords". A. Using the hand with fingers together, palm flat and stretched out, chop horizontally cutting the air with your hand about 2 inches above the object (5 to 6 cm for you metric people!) and stop the chop abruptly and definitely at the end of the range of motion as if doing a karate chop. This turns the vibrations into good ones. B. Hold your breath and stay centered and focused and keep the focus on the tantien (tanden, dantien, danden, etc.) as you do this technique. www.nlitn.in 6519 Mar 2014
  66. 66. Nentatsu-ho Nentatsu-ho is a Reiki method for sending a thought or wish, also called a "deprogramming" technique. The technique itself is thought to send a thought or wish to yourself (higher self) or that of another with Reiki energy or vibrations. The technique is simple to do and involves placing your hands on another's head (or your own) and confidently transmitting or sending the message with a pure mind and intent. It is important to understand that this is not healing with mind power, but rather sending a message to the person's sub consciousness with the Reiki energy. Do not push, strain or try to hard as it can create tension for you and the other person. Like all reiki techniques, this is an effortless practice. It is done from a relaxed, meditative state of mind that is free of selfish intent. This technique is still seen in the west in some attunement sets. It is common for the hands to be placed on the forehead and back of the head and to place an affirmation such as "you are perfectly attuned to the Reiki", etc., when doing the attunement. www.nlitn.in 6619 Mar 2014
  67. 67. Nentatsu-ho can be used to share or transmit the five principles of Reiki, to remove bad habits, to reinforce good or positive alternate behaviors when treating bad habits, to reinforce functional or positive affirmations and many other possibilities. If you are doing this for other people, make sure you understand clearly what the other person wants. Make sure you choose positive affirmations. A. Connect to Reiki. One method is to hold your hands up high in the air to feel the Reiki energy and let its light flow into your whole being. B. Bring the hands down and place one hand on the forehead (hairline) and the other on the back of the head. The affirmation "I am the Great Universe, Great Life Source and Great Reality" was taught to me to say at this point. You can say, "you are healed, healthy, well" or any other affirmation that you choose. It is an aid to treatment and healing. The important part is to keep the intent clear, pure and confident. C. Move the hand on the forehead to the back of the head by placing that hand on top/bottom of the other hand that is already on the back of the head and send the energy there for several minutes. www.nlitn.in 6719 Mar 2014
  68. 68. Reiki Mawashi Reiki Mawashi is commonly known as a Reiki Circle. This is a group of Reiki practitioners in a circle. The hands are held with your left hand palm up and your right palm down. Your left palm is placed against the next person's right hand that is palm down on top of it. All members are connected in this manner making a complete circle. The circle is part energy movement and part meditation. The Reiki flows from the crown down the right arm to the hand and the overflow goes into the left hand of the person next to you. The energy moves into all and around the circle in this manner. The energy can be quite intense over time. Some traditions hold an inch to three inches between the participant's hands. Some traditions have a master stand in the center of the circle to direct the flow.www.nlitn.in 6819 Mar 2014
  69. 69. Byosen Reikian-ho Byosen means "focused healing". Byosen is what you feel energetically from the source of the disease. What you feel varies from person to person and illness to illness. This is not a diagnostic technique, but a way to find and treat the source of illness. Some sensations could be pulsating, piercing, pain, numbness, heat, cool, coldness, tingling, tickling, a moving sensation, etc. Byosen may be in close proximity to the person's perceived problem or in another area of the body entirely. This process develops with practice and time. It is said that Byosen was done at the beginning and end of a treatment; in the beginning to find the problem areas and at the end to re-balance the aura. The fingers are "coned". This is a simple position where all four fingers and the thumb are touching. The little finger and thumb are touching. This forms a hand position resembling a "cone". In the Chinese Martial Arts this is called a "Crane's Beak". The technique is part scanning and part beaming. The practitioner should ask to be guided for the highest good of the client. You move the hand and "scan" to find where there are blocks and where to place your hand. It is part scanning and part intuition where you move the hands as they move. Energy is sent into areas that are intuited through the coned fingers as a type of "focused" healing. www.nlitn.in 6919 Mar 2014

  71. 71. www.nlitn.in 71 A Word to the Wise: Please keep in mind a few things: • This is considered an alternative healing system, thus just because you are trained in Reiki now does not mean you are a medical professional in any way. You should ALWAYS encourage whomever you help to seek professional medical advice from a Doctor or Nurse practitioner. Again, Reiki is not a replacement for real medical treatment! • Remember, as a Reiki practitioner, you are just a conduit for the energy coming through you. Thus, technically you are not the one ‘healing’, you are just facilitating the process. In the end, it is always the body that heals itself. • Like anything else that is considered ‘spiritual’ in nature, feel free to take all of this with a grain of salt – in my book skepticism is a good thing! 19 Mar 2014
