  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome. My name is Patriek SijinKarayil, Program Director for the Search & Taxonomy Group at National Instruments. We are a platform group that focuses on enterprise metadata. Needless to say, We all agree on the value and importance of Metadata. But our approach is revolutionary because of the scope and adoption, and how we have strategically innovated leveraging our metadata investment.
  • The need? We’re a volume company! We have a highly diverse product offering and multiplex that with a highly diverse customer base gives rise to a lot long tail demand. This requires a high level of automation since manual processing will not scale to the demand.---------Diverse Product offerings coupled with a diverse customer base give rise to a lot of long tail demand and needs. We are a volume company! This requires: Scalability of our business processes and IT infrastructure High-level of automation; manual processing does not scale Superior web site as an important component of our business model! - front-end: quality and quantity of the information - virtually all engineers do their research on the Internet - back-end: tight integration with backend applications – moving data through the systems requires high level of integration
  • As you just saw our scope is organizing and integrating all of NI’s content. This is where it sets us apart. We have proliferated our taxonomy not just across web content about all the systems, be it our Enterprise Data, Financial information, inventory, manufacturing, eCommerce, Marketing, Sales, R&D, etc. Now there is a common language across than spans both technologies and functional areas.Given this degree of adoption, we can leverage this metadata investment and add business value through dynamic content reuse and linking.
  • So we developed a configurablemetadata enrichment tool that provides integration with multiple repositories pulling related data from external data sources. This integration provides business value that did not have to be managed by the content owners. An example of this:- we can dynamically link our Online Product pages with respective Product Manuals using the consistent metadata. This system also provides change automation (back-end data changes) will automate re-process the required content and dynamically update any relevant business value add. -------and event driven triggers (DNA data changes). That means as users maintain their data, they are improving the way we offer product navigation on our site.
  • There are numerous examples where we have capitalized on this dynamic content linking. One of which is Faceted Navigation. Here by linking the Online product content to the Product Specifications DB, customers can now navigate and locate the right product based on their needs. We saw astronomical success with this implementation and since adopted this faceted navigation across several site section on ni.com
  • The second example is to show this is not just used external. We created an internal application for the Sales folks, so they can get a 360 degree view of their territory. For this we leveraged our metadata, and our search platform to pull related data like opp, contacts, orders, etc into one location.
  • These business impact are an excellent testament for the value add we can provide across the company.
  • To close, this is a foundational solution that powers innovations like faceted navigation and new innovations that have yet to be discovered. And the solution being foundational we can always keep the time to market for these new innovations really low and hence further increasing business impact.
