  • 5. Mouse Terms
    • Point
      • Position the mouse on the desired item.
    • Click
      • Quickly tap a button on the mouse once.
    • Double-click
      • Tap the left mouse button twice in quick succession.
    • Drag
      • Press and hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to a specific location, and then release the mouse button.

  • 6. Mouse Icons
    • The mouse I-beam pointer appears in a program screen where you enter text.
    • The mouse pointer appears as an arrow pointing up and to the left.
    • The mouse pointer becomes a double-headed arrow when performing functions such as resizing a window.
    • The mouse pointer becomes a four-headed arrow to move a selected object left, right, up, or down.
    • The hour glass means “please wait.”
    • The pointer turns into a hand on certain icons and hyperlinks. Clicking will display additional information.

    • Move mouse pointer to current time at the far right side of Taskbar—current day and date will display in a yellow pop-up box.
    • Position mouse pointer on Start button on Taskbar, click left mouse button.

    • At Start menu, point to All Programs and point to Microsoft Office .
    • Move mouse pointer to Microsoft Office Word 2007 in side menu, click left mouse button.

    • Close Microsoft Word by clicking Close button in upper right corner of program.
    • At Windows XP desktop, position mouse pointer on Recycle Bin icon, double-click left mouse button.
    • Close Recycle Bin window by clicking Close button in upper right corner of window.

    • Shut down Windows XP by clicking Start button and clicking Turn Off Computer at Start menu.
    • At Turn off window, click Turn Off option.

    • At Windows XP desktop, double-click Recycle Bin icon.
    • Move the window on the desktop by positioning the mouse pointer on the window Title bar (along top of the window), hold down left mouse button, drag the window to a different location on the desktop, and release mouse button.

    • Click Start button on Taskbar, then click My Computer at Start menu.
    • Be sure the Title bar of Recycle Bin window is visible (if not, move My Computer window) and click Recycle Bin Title bar.

    • Minimize Recycle Bin window to a task button on Taskbar by clicking the Minimize button (contains underscore symbol) at right side of Recycle Bin Title bar.

    • Click OK to close Date & Time Properties dialog box.

    • Tabs: Click a dialog box tab and the dialog box options change.
    • Text box: Type or edit text in a text box. May contain an up or down pointing arrow to allow options.
    • Drop-down list box: Click the down pointing arrow at the right side of a drop-down list box and a list of choices displays.

    • List box: A list box displays a list of options.
    • Check boxes: If a check box contains a mark, the option is active
    • Option buttons: Only one option button in a dialog box can be selected (dark or colored) at any time.
    • Command buttons: Click a command button to execute or cancel a command.

    • Slider: Using the mouse, drag a slider to increase or decrease the number, speed, or percentage of the option.
    • Scroll bar: A scroll bar displays when the information in a window is larger than can fit in the window.

    • Position mouse pointer on Volume button at right side of Taskbar, then click left mouse button.
    • After viewing Volume slider, click on any empty location on desktop to remove slider. If you had to open Volume Control window, click Close button.

    • Right-click on any empty location on Taskbar, then click Properties at shortcut menu that displays.

    • Display Taskbar by moving mouse pointer to bottom of desktop.
