      • Unalienable rights: rights that cannot be taken away
      • Inherent: natural; rights that cannot be taken away.
    3. Essential Understandings
      • New political ideas led to a desire for independence and democratic government in the American colonies.
    4. Essential Understandings
      • The Declaration of Independence proclaimed independence from England. It stated that people have natural (inherent) rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
    5. Important People: John Locke
      • English philosopher who stated that people have inherent rights to life, liberty, and property and the government made a contract to protect the rights of the people.
      • Governments have only the specific powers people consent to give it.
