  • Even in the face of ongoing change in our industry, some things remain the same…
  • The key to this shift is virtualization, the foundation of cloud computing.Virtualization simplifies the infrastructure eliminating time consuming and costly management of silos, increases efficiency through greater utilization, and enables new levels of automation, all of which significantly drives down the cost structure of IT.The evidence of this value is clear, just looking at how quickly virtualization has been adopted in Global IT organizations, now overtaking physical system deployment.
  • That new era is characterized by the promise of cloud computing. The “Web” completely changed the way we think about consuming services over the internet. But that was only half of the picture. The other half is how those services are delivered. That’s the focus of cloud computing, which completes the transformation of service delivery. VMware, the customer-proven leader in virtualization, is aggressively helping businesses pave the path to “Cloud Computing”, which promises to be the new era in IT that tackles both cost and complexity issues, while also enabling new levels of agility.
  • A lot of dialog on cloud, and many vendors purport a self-serving definition. <click> There are public cloud infrastructure services, as represented by some of these companies.<click>There are public cloud platform services for the development of rich, cloud enabled applications, as represented by some of these companies including our partnerships with Salesforce and Google.<click>There are also SaaS offerings, which have suddenly become “cloud”.And of course there is a growing number of private clouds, that are being constructed and operated within the datacenters of businesses, because after all…<click>Cloud is not a destination, it’s an approach. In fact, our belief is that the new era in IT will combine all of these into a secure, cohesive whole which will enable IT as a Service. That, is how VMware defines and is executing on its cloud computing strategy.<add this click>Not just any cloud, but “Your Cloud”. The only cloud that really matters.
  • Simply put, Your Cloud enables the transformation of focus from how IT is produced, to how businesses consume it. It’s a way of repurposing IT investment within the organization, to ensure more direct alignment of IT investment with business value.
  • The link between IT and end-users is applications. Existing applications, new applications that will be developed to support new business value, and the increasing emergence of SaaS apps in the business.<click>And these applications will be sourced from existing datacenters, as well as from external cloud services.<click>And of course end users will access these applications from a growing variety of devices. This creates the new IT landscape that must be addressed in the new world of cloud computing. An approach based on cloud computing promises new benefits to the business:<click> A more flexible, and efficient infrastructure upon which the journey to IT agility will begin. <click>A new generation of enterprise applications, that will represent the convergence of the type of end-user experience we see in the consumer world, with the requirements of the enterprise.<click>And finally, a more empowered mobile workforce, that doesn’t compromise the security of corporate assets and data.
  • But the challenge is that IT must weave this all together into a cohesive, secure, compliant whole in a way that improves IT agility, not impedes it.
  • To address this challenge, VMware is focused on three core solution areas in IT:How best to evolve the infrastructure to support this new world,Changes in application development to speed time-to-market for business-critical applications, that take advantage of this new world,And a new way of approaching end-user computing, to increase user satisfaction.<click>Let’s begin by exploring the evolution of infrastructure.
  • Every one of our customers has existing applications, running in existing datacenters, that represents significant investments and ongoing value. The first thing we are doing with these customers, is helping them stand-up a Private Cloud, to get the most efficiency and agility out of their existing assets. And this can be done in a pragmatic, evolutionary way. We have over 250,000 customers worldwide that are already on this path, because they are leveraging vSphere to virtualize the entire fabric of the datacenter, including CPU & memory, storage, and networking. And because they are using vSphere, they get built-in high-availability, and automated, dynamic resource scheduling to give them the cloud attributes of elastic, pooled capacity. <click>With virtualization in place, the independent silos are broken down, enabling us to automate many of the mundane, repetitive administration tasks with our vCenter management suite, further decreasing opex in the datacenter.
  • In this new world of dynamic infrastructure, where application workloads can be moved, on-demand to accommodate user demands and SLA enforcement, we need to re-think our approach to security.<click>With VMware vShield products, we move from static, physical devices to virtual appliances, that are embedded within the infrastructure with an inside-out security model – protecting the VM, the application, and the logical boundaries of the virtual datacenter. This actually contributes to a tighter security model, while still benefitting from the dynamic nature of cloud computing.
  • Another attractive benefit of cloud computing is the notion of on-demand, self-service, which contributes to increased customer satisfaction and business agility. This notion is just as important in the Private Cloud, but needs to be done in a way that conforms to IT security policies.<click>Businesses are made-up of multiple organizations, such as our example here with both Marketing and Finance. Each organization has members, or users, with respective security policies, as defined in corporate identity management systems. <click>With vCloud Director, IT organizations can define catalogs of pre-defined IT services, that can be accessed through a self-service portal, and deployed to pre-configured logical datacenters, or Virtual Datacenters as we refer to them, that represent committed SLA’s to the organization. And with our Chargeback module, IT can set-up pay-for-use models for each organization, dependent on their virtual datacenter and actual usage parameters.
  • These steps are what transform existing datacenters, into cost-effective, flexible Private Cloud environments. That is the focus of VMware’s Cloud Infrastructure solutions, covering all aspects of infrastructure, including security and management.
  • The real value in cloud computing is when all boundaries are flexible, to enable cross-cloud federation and coordination. This is what gives customers maximum choice and flexibility in how to streamline costs and improve agility. Our belief is that cloud computing implies a ubiquitous model for interoperability between multiple clouds, both within and outside the enterprise. We refer to this as Open Cloud Computing, which we are fully committed to.<click>This is why VMware is working with so many public cloud service providers, as part of our vCloud program, to create compatible cloud environments for application mobility.<click>In particular, we are working with a handful of service providers to create a secure, enterprise-class cloud service, that uses a common service-level management model based on vCloud Director, and a common security model based on vShield, to extend the trust boundary of the enterprise into these public cloud services, and enable the safe, secure mobility of application workloads between the environments. <click>This class of service is referred to as the VMware vCloud Datacenter Service, and ensures a common platform, management model, and security model, to create the ultimate secure hybrid cloud environment. With vCloud, open cloud computing moves from being a technology discussion, to a business decision!
  • Cloud Infrastructure & Management is just the beginning, and a way to amplify the value of existing IT assets. But inevitably, organizations will also need to develop new applications for new business opportunities.
  • In this new world, we see a new set of requirements for enterprise applications:The convergence of consumer experience with business IT applicationsThe ability to rapidly deploy new applications both inside the firewall and/or outside the firewall leveraging public cloud infrastructureNew approaches to wide-scale data management and service integration.This new approach requires a new platform for application development, which we refer to as a Cloud Application Platform. It consists of 2 main layers: Frameworks and tools layer, to increase developer productivityPlatform services layer, providing pre-packaged services to enable cloud development in a rapid, proven fashion
  • VMware’s Cloud Application Platform is VMware vFabric.Our first offering enables Java developers to leverage the Spring framework – the most commonly used framework for Java development in the world – for cloud application development. Over time, we intend to support multiple languages and frameworks as part of our Cloud Application Platform offering.
  • One requirement for these new cloud applications, is that they must be portable across cloud environments! And this is the design principle of VMware vFabric.In fact, VMware is partnering with major PaaS vendors to provide freedom of choice for developing cloud-scale applications across multiple environments. Such as our partnership with Salesforce.com to create vmForce, and our partnership with Google and their Google app engine.
  • Although applications written on vFabric will be portable, we will of course optimize them on VMware vCloud Offerings. We are designing in intelligence sharing between the application platform and the infrastructure layer to increase visibility of application execution and performance, auto-manage scaling, and simplify application provisioning.
  • That’s our investment focus in Cloud Application Platform. Now let’s turn our attention to how end users will participate in this new world of dynamic, cloud computing.
  • There is so much talk about “desktop computing” in our industry, and it paints a picture a device-centric approach, <click>Vs. a user-centric approach.
  • First off, for most users of business IT services, Windows Applications represent a shrinking percentage of their work time.More and more time is being spent in enterprise applications delivered mostly via the web, and an increasing amount of SaaS applications that are being adopted by businesses.
  • The same is true for devices. The classic “PC” is becoming just one of several devices that end users are taking advantage of to access their business environments.Thus, one really has to ask … “Why are we trying to optimize the end-user’s world around an old Windows/PC paradigm?”
  • Shouldn’t we in fact optimize the world of IT access around end-users? Provide them the freedom and choice they require, while maintaining a secure, compliant environment to meet the needs of the business.We refer to this as End-User Computing.
  • And what will make this transition both possible and cost-effective, is the leverage of a properly constructed cloud computing infrastructure. By moving the apps and data into the cloud, and securing the cloud and access to it, we can enable end-users to freely choose their devices, while ensuring corporate assets are secure, and centrally managed to reduce complexity and costs.Access to information and applications anywhere, anytime, from any device, without compromise.
  • These are the 3 layers of the Cloud Stack that we see emerging in this new cloud era. Each independent, enabling full choice and portability in a hybrid cloud world, and enabling innovation to proceed at its own pace within each layer. And each layer communicating one to the other through policy-driven interfaces, leveraging automation, to ensure a secure, compliant whole.

  • Based on our experience with over 250K customers worldwide, the journey starts with the virtualization of IT owned and controlled assets. E.g. file and print servers, even email and collaboration. The focus of this early phase is cost reduction through server consolidation.
  • The IT Production phase proves out the value proposition for the next phase – Business Production. Business Production is all about virtualizing Tier 1 application workloads, including Oracle databases and applications, SAP, etc. The driver for this phase is all about increased quality of Service. What IT organizations find during the IT Production phase is that applications that are virtualized are more secure, and more reliable, than those that aren’t. In fact, many customers have replaced expensive hardware/software solutions for ensuring robust SLA’s with the high-availability support available in VMware’s core virtualization platform – vSphere.
  • Phase 3 – ITaaS – is all about improving agility, and thus optimizing the environment for business consumption.Customers that are focused on Phase 3 are typically transitioning to a full Private Cloud environment within their datacenter, which is capable of federating to public cloud services, delivering on the full promise of open cloud computing.
  • Phase 1 is all about cutting costs. Phase 2 is all about improving the quality of service delivery. In combination, Phases 1 and 2 are about Optimizing the Production of IT Services, and the results are impressive…
  • The impact to IT can be characterized in 3 categories of resource savings – financial, human, and the earth’s. The first category, Financial Resources, is what attracts most people to virtualization in the beginning – server consolidation. For example, VMware customers have seen on average a 50 to 60 percent cost reduction in server hardware when leveraging VMware technology. Of even bigger impact for some is the ability to delay costly datacenter expansion, because of the reclaimed floor space, power and cooling as a result of these consolidation efforts. The second category is Human Resources, or staff labor. This is all about shifting their focus away from managing hardware, to spending time on business needs. A study of our highly virtualized customer base showed that on average these customers were spending one-third less time on routine administrative tasks in IT operations due to virtualization and the automation achieved with it. That’s a third of your day, everyday, in return capacity. And finally, the Earth’s Resources, which contributes literally to green initiatives. Virtualization in the datacenter has shown the ability to save up to 80% in energy costs. The result of all of these savings can now be applied to the business. And with advances in automation and self-service enablement, IT can dramatically increase its responsiveness to the business.
  • And this is why Phase 3 is all about Optimizing Business Consumption. The achievement of IT as a Service, and the perfect alignment of IT to Business Value.
