McBride, Kevin Lowe, Anwar Moryan, Javed Akram: A Case of Pheochromocytoma, 93rd Annual Session of Southern Medical Association, Dallas Texas, November, 1999 CLINICAL TRIALS AND INVESTIGATIONS: 1999-2000 Investigator, National Asian Indian Heart Disease Project (NAIHDP), University of California at Berkley The Purpose of the National Asian Indian Heart Disease Project is to collect patient information, blood samples, and store DNA in order to determine the prevalence of inherited disorders linked to coronary artery disease, and prevalence of coronary artery disease in Asian Indian Population. This may be of immediate benefit to the patient by identifying high coronary artery disease risk disorders, and if atherosclerosis is present assist in guiding therapeutic decisions 1998-2001 Investigator, Treatment of Cholesterol to new target levels (TNT), “The effect of LDL-Cholesterol Lowering Beyond Currently Recommended Minimum Targets on Coronary Heart Disease Occurrence in Patients at High CHD Risk” Parke Davis & Pfizer By current guideline, the LDL-C has to be lowered to less than 100 mg/dl in patients with coronary artery disease. This study intends to compare two patient populations, in Group I the LDL-C will be lowered to conventional level, in Study Group the LDL-C will be lowered to less than 75 mg/dl; beyond currently recommended levels, the two groups will be compared in regards to survival data as well as clinical outcomes like myocardial infarction.
  • 10. 10 1993-94 Co-investigator, "Eight-week Comparative Study of the Percent of Subjects Achieving NCEP LDL-C Goal While on Fluvastatin or Mevacor." Sandoz Pharmaceutical Corporation ($55,000) This eight week trial compared the effect of two cholesterol lowering medicine fluvastatin and lovastatin. The results of the study showed that lowering of the cholesterol was comparable in these two groups. Fluvastatin is one of the cheapest cholesterol lowering medicine available, this study has tremendous economic impact and was used for FDA approval of Fluvastatin. 1993-94 Collaborator, "An Open Label, Positive-controlled, 48-week, Multicenter Study of Troglitazone in Patients with Non-insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus to Assess Potential Effects on Cardiac Mass and Function." Parke Davis ($245,080) Rezulin or troglitazone is one of the insulin sensitizers, used to treat diabetes mellitus, specially the Non insulin dependant type. Insulin is a potent stimulus that causes the enlargement and stiffening of the heart muscle. As troglitazone decreases the insulin requirements in a person, in this study it was shown that by reducing insulin requirements this drug can help reduce stiffening of the heart muscle. 1990-95 Collaborator, "Caffeine Influences on Exercise and Psychological Stress". NIH-HL 32050 ($1,140,000) This National Institute of Health sponsored grant looked at the effect of coffee drinking on blood pressure response to stress. In this study multiple groups of patients were compared. It was shown that by drinking coffee the blood pressure can shoot up and make a borderline hypertensive patient as hypertensive. It was also shown that a single dose of caffeine can cause acute elevation of blood pressure in men with borderline to mild hypertension( Ref: Pincomb et al. American Journal of Cardiology, 1996;75:270-274) 1993-94 Collaborator, "Amlodipine Study for Angina Patients", Pfizer Labs L-0232 ($28,000) Amlodipine is an oral calcium-channel blocker. Amlodipine inhibits the influx of extracellular calcium across the myocardial and vascular smooth muscle cell membranes. This study analysed the usefulness of amlodipine in the treatment of angina and concluded that amlodipine does help this group of patients.. 1993-96 Collaborator, Assessment of Treatment with Lisinopril and Survival," Zeneca ($75,375) ILLUSTRATION
