  • CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Current Post I currently work as a consultant cardiologist at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital within the National Health Service. I also see patients and perform procedures at the London Bridge and Wellington Hospitals. Current practice Pacing and intracardiac defibrillator implantation: I have been implanting both dual and single chamber pacemakers since 1992 and biventricular devices since 2001. My training in implantation of defibrillators began in 1994 and had the privilege of being trained when abdominal implantation of the defibrillator generator was commonplace and have been involved in defibrillator implantation during the evolution to sub- pectoral and then subcutaneous implantation. I routinely perform abdominal box changes independently but still involve a general surgeon in the rare cases when a new abdominal defibrillator implantation is required. My practice currently involves personally implanting or supervising the implantation and follow up of 250 defibrillators and 330 pacemakers a year. Electrophysiology/Ablation: My clinical post involves 5 pacing, electrophysiology and ablation sessions a week. I am fully trained in all aspects of electrophysiology and catheter ablation and regularly perform transeptal puncture, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia ablation. I supervise and teach junior SpRs techniques for electrophysiology and ablation. I have an interest in the treatment of arrhythmia grown up congenital heart disease and perform electrophysiological procedures on patients referred from the Middlesex, the Royal Brompton and Great Ormond street hospitals. I have also helped to establish a programme of surgical AF ablation procedures St Bart’s. I regularly perform lead extractions and have presented papers at the British cardiac society and American college of cardiology scientific sessions, and published in Heart on the subject. General cardiology: I perform 1 cardiology clinic a week and carry out regular ward rounds at both St Barts and the Royal London Hospitals. I am trained in transoesophageal echo. RESEARCH
  • I have a particular interest in novel arrhythmia mapping and ablation techniques and am currently supervising 3 research fellows, for which I hold British Heart Foundation and industry awarded grants. I also supervise 2 research nurses one funded by industry and one by the British Heart foundation. I have 6 research projects in progress at the moment covering topics such as radiation reduction using non-fluoroscopic mapping systems, catheter ablation of coarse AF, catheter maze for cure of permanent AF, new applications for bi-ventricular defibrillators and catheter ablation for the patients with adult congenital heart disease. Other Duties I am a member of the UK government’s expert advisory board for the new national service framework chapter on arrhythmia which was published in March 2005 I am a founding member of the arrhythmia alliance a patient and physician collaboration aimed at improving the lives of patients with arrhythmia. I am a founder and council member of the UK interventional electrophysiology society (Heart Rhythm UK – intervention). TEACHING Postgraduate 1) I am founder and course director for the City Basic EP course and ICD course. 2) I am also lecturer for the Augustus Waller meeting on cardiac arrhythmias. This is an annual meeting with an international faculty which this year is demonstrating live cases at three satellite-linked sites (St Mary’s, CHU de Bordeaux, and Hertzzentrum Leipzig) to an audience of 200 electrophysiologists at the Royal College of Physicians London. 3) I am an invited lecturer for the BPEG foundation and advanced course in electrophysiology, the BCIS advanced angioplasty meeting, the North Thames cardiology training program and I lecture for the Imperial College “advanced arrhythmia management” course and a basic electrophysiology course that runs at St Mary’s Hospital. I am also the member of industry sponsored “expert speaker” panels. 4) I teach cardiac sessions for the House Officers for the trust which take place in the Prescott street simulation labs.
  • 5) I have been invited to faculty to the Heart Rhythm Society, European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society, American Heart Association, British Cardiac Society and European society of cardiology scientific sessions. Undergraduate I give regular tutorials to clinical students and am a lecturer on the cardiology BSc course. I am also a co-director of the cardiology nurses study day which is a general cardiology course running every 6 months AUDIT AND PROTOCOLS I am regularly involved in audit particularly of electrophysiology, ablation and pacing procedures and have developed electronic audit systems allowing complete collection of results and outcomes data on all pacing and electrophysiology procedures at St Barts. LEISURE INTERESTS I regularly skydive, complete 80 jumps a year and hold a category 10 rating. I play 5- a-side football for Barts. I took up rugby for the first time in 1996 and played until 2003 as the 1st XV second or back row for Old Olavians RFC when a neck injury forced my retirement. I was awarded 2nd XV player of the year for 1997/98 and the coach's club player of the year for 1998/99. I regularly ski and snowboard and play golf.
