What Does A Healthcare Scientist in Physiological Sciences Do <ul><li>Perform a wide range of diagnostic and treatment procedures on patients </li></ul><ul><li>Examples </li></ul><ul><li>- Cardiology </li></ul><ul><li>Diagnose patients with heart disease and provide and monitor the necessary treatments e.g implantation and follow up of cardiac pacemakers </li></ul><ul><li>- Neurophysiology </li></ul><ul><li>Diagnose neurological disorders such as epilepsy, nerve disease and brainstem function </li></ul><ul><li>- Respiratory Physiology </li></ul><ul><li>Perform breathing tests on patients with lung disease, for example industrial lung disease, asthma, lung cancer </li></ul>

A Week In The Life Of A Trainee Clinical Physiologist <ul><li>1 day per week attendance at university to undertake a BSc (Hons) Degree in Clinical Physiology </li></ul><ul><li>½ day study time </li></ul><ul><li>3 ½ days working in a hospital department performing tests on patients, dealing with relatives, working within a multidisciplinary team with nurses, doctors, radiographers and support staff to provide a high level of healthcare </li></ul><ul><li>All clinical training takes place in the training department with supervision from the designated work place supervisor </li></ul>

Clinical Physiologist Training Entry Requirements 4 GCSE’s at grade C or above including Maths, English Language and Dual Science, or 2 science subjects plus a minimum of 2 A levels, including at least once science subject, totalling 140 points or more Equivalent qualifications will be considered For cardiology trainees the requirements are 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above including Maths, English Language and Dual Science – plus 3 A levels at grade C or above including 2 sciences, one of which must be Biology Equivalent qualifications will be considered
  5. 5. Training Structure 4 year training contract combining day/block release study for BSc (Hons) Degree with a clinical placement Hours worked are 37.5/week Salary is Annexe U to AfC Band 5, which is approximately £ 16,100 per annum

How Do I Become a Trainee Clinical Physiologist <ul><li>Routes into Training </li></ul><ul><li>Yorkshire and Humber Training Scheme in Clinical Technology and Clinical Physiology </li></ul><ul><li>Recruitment each year of approximately 25 trainees who will be placed in various training departments across Yorkshire and the Humber Region </li></ul><ul><li>Vacancies are advertised on the NHS jobs website at www.jobs.nhs.uk around February/March each year </li></ul><ul><li>Managed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on behalf of Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority </li></ul>

Routes Into Training Through Leeds University (For Cardiac Trainees Only) Applications are through www.ucas.com before 15 th January These students are managed by Leeds University and placed in a cardiology department within the Yorkshire area for 4 years with a salary of approximately £ 16,000. The course fees are NHS funded NHS Trust Contracts This is rare now, but occasionally NHS trusts will advertise and recruit trainees as permanent members of staff and fund their training and salary costs, upgrading them to a fully qualified post once training is completed
