Programme structures and features, credit and award requirements The course commences in October each year and runs for 2 terms of 11 weeks followed by 1 term of 9 weeks. Students are required to attend full-time during this period. The whole course runs for a calendar year. Dr Michael Henein, Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Cardiology and Director of Echocardiography has overall responsibility for the course. Dr. Alison Duncan is the Course Tutor in Cardiology, who will teach, organise, and run teaching sessions, as well as act as personal mentor to the students. The taught course is based around a series of lectures, tutorials, out-patients clinics, ward rounds, and student presentations which take place throughout the year. Students will also have regular formative assessment with set essays. The course is not modular at present. In addition, a full time dissertation of 10-15,000 words will be carried out. The title of the dissertation, offered by prospective supervisors, will be made available in term 2, and will be based on a research project or literature review, chosen from a designated list of topics and in agreement with the senior tutor. Students will be given 6 months to complete their dissertation, which must be submitted by the end of September. The final examination is conducted at the NHLI Brompton Campus and consists of three parts: In June: (1) a written essay paper; and (2) an oral examination; In September: (3) completion of the required dissertation, which also contributes to the Final Examination. Students who are Specialist Registrars in Cardiology in the UK may also be accepted on the course on a number of scholarships available based on an open competition. Successful candidates are awarded the University of London MSc in Cardiology. 3

If a student asks to see a particular condition or specific technique which will be useful when they return home we do our best to accommodate this • We encourage MSc students to choose for their dissertation a topic which will help them contribute a new service to their hospital when they return home. 13. Criteria for admission • Medical degree plus two suitable references • Appropriate post-graduate clinical experience (12 months at registrar level) • Full MRCP (UK or equivalent) or qualification deemed by the senior tutor as equivalent (eg Diploma) • Proficiency in English 14. Regulation of assessment a) Assessment rules and degree classification • The minimum pass mark is 50% overall, 70% represents a distinction • 30% marks awarded for written paper, 20% for oral and 50% for the dissertation • To qualify for the award of MSc, students should have achieved at least 80% attendance on the course, complete all the course requirements, and achieve an overall pass mark in the combined examinations and in the research project Summary of grades, marks and their interpretation for MSc degree classification GRADE MARKS INTERPRETATION A 70% - 100% Distinction performance B/C 50% - 69% Pass D 40% - 49% Fail performance at MSc level E 0% - 39% Fail performance (with major shortcomings) b) Role of external examiners There are 2 external examiners, from other universities and research institutes in the UK. They are nominated by the MSc Academic Board, and approved by the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine Postgraduate Quality Committee. External Examiners review the course modules, and act as moderator. In order to do this, they: • approve examination papers • moderate essay papers • see all examination scripts and research project dissertations • viva students • attend the Board of Examiners meeting to discuss results • complete a report to the College 16.
