I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThe USS Akron over Manhattan. Sadly this airship crashed tail-first in to the sea in 1933, killing 73 of the 76 men on board. A blimp sent to rescue them also crashed, killing two more. This is probably why the US Navy don’t use airships any more.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThe USS Macon’s spy bucket! Airships would hide in the clouds and lower this down to see what was going on below without being spotted, kind of like in upside down periscope.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThis is what happens when your airship gets caught in a gust of wind and you don’t balance it in time. They got it back down again, and it was able to fly the next day.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThis is the USS Los Angeles, a Zeppelin that was given to the US by the German Government due to war reparations. It’s moored to the USS Patoka, a mast ship. If you look closely you can see an anchor hanging from the other end of the airship.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooA photo of a German Zeppelin. Most of the other photos in this talk are of American ones, because the pictures I found were better.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThe Hindenburg disaster is totally over-blown. Of the 97 people on board, only 35 died. That’s much better than most plane crashes.2 years ago

I love Zeppelins, and you should tooThe R100 and R101 were British airships built in 1929 for the Imperial Airship Scheme, which planned to use them for passenger transport between Britain and her colonies. R100 made it to Canada and back. R101 set off for Calcutta, but only got as far as France before it crashed in a storm. The program was then scrapped. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Airship_Scheme2 years ago
