    What Is Barcamp - Presentation Transcript

    1. What is a barcamp? everything you need to run your own! March 04 2008
    2. Open • Open Source • Open Formats • Open Sharing
    3. Participatory • Do-cracy • Anyone and Everyone Presents • Law of two feet • only requirement - enthusiasm to do and discuss
    4. Open Spaces • Whoever comes is the right people • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have • Whenever it starts is the right time • When it's over, it's over
    5. Law of two feet • If at any time during our time together you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet. Go to some other place where you may learn and contribute.
    6. Before the event...
    7. Why • Theme! • tags • keywords
    8. Tagging • short • unique • date? • easy to spell/remember
    9. Location • will typically be your largest limiting factor!
    10. Spaces aka Zones • many little ones • a few or one big Space • can be rooms but doesn’t have to be • best is if chairs can move!
    11. WIFI • get a real volunteer to set it up and be in charge • test it!
    12. Wiki • The TAG • Who’s going • planning on presenting • sponsors
    13. Who is coming • Get Contact info - how many is crucial! • Recruit Special planners • food • sponsors • locale • wifi
    14. To Bring • Huge postits or whiteboards • Tape • Markers
    15. prep - optional • Food and drinks • if no sponsorships available ask community to bring food and drinks on WIKI • Signage (or let community create at event) • projectors are nice
    16. Sponsorships • First is hardest • Chunk into functionality(lunch, breakfast, supplies) • Give credit • post to wiki, blog, signs at event • stickers, t-shirts, flyers?
    17. marketing • blogs, event calendars, prewritten email prewritten tweet • logo? • highlight any famous people in additional posts • good tags!

    19. Intro - set the tone! • go over basics of a barcamp for newbies • pimp the tag for the event! • wifi password • location of grid
    20. Intros • aka Human Search Engine • everyone goes around the room and says • Your name • Title • 3 TAGS ONLY - self tagging
    21. The prezo • prep a ton • or don’t prep at all • do a panel • make the entire room a panel (aka discussion!) • create a workgroup that continues after event
    22. The grid • Time and location - let people fill in title and speaker • Needs to be centrally located • Needs to be editable • Presentations • Time slots - do not have to be structured 15 mins - 3 hours (see law of two feet) • Spaces need names (theme?)
    23. Default mode • is to SHARE • but people can request off the record - but be explicit!
    24. Tourists • don’t be one • participate • if scared - say I’m new. Everyone was new once. Saying you are new is about setting expectations!

    26. Tagging = sharing • Blogging ie Twitter • Photosharing ie Flickr • Videosharing ie youtube, blip.tv • Presentationsharing ie slideshare.net • Social bookmarking ie del.icio.us • Social site annotation - Diigo

    28. Viral - world wide • Formula can be changed • Codeathon • startup weekends • dev camps
    29. Sponsors • be sure to thank them... for free food next time.
