The Greek people were polytheistic (they believed in many gods). They were a lot of gods, but the most famous of them were Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, Poseidon, Aphrodite, Athena, Demeter, Hermes, Ares and Hades.
He was the most important god for the Greeks, because he was the king of the other gods. Zeus was the god of the sky, and the Greeks said that he lived on the top of Mount Olympus and he was able to throw thunderbolts.
The Olympic Games were created over 2,700 years ago, in Greek town called Olympia. The Olympic Games were like a festival. The Greek people believed that they had to be strong, because the Greek gods loved it. So, they created the Olympic Games to become stronger, and in honour of Zeus, the king of the gods.
All the cities spent a lot of time selecting the best sportsmen from their cities, and the chosen ones competed against other sportsmen from other cities. Every 5 years the Olympic Games were held in Olympia. At these Games there were a lot of different sport events such as running, jumping, javelin throwing and disc throwing.
