  • Remote Management of Network Closets in the Hospital Environment All rights reserved © Minicom Advanced Systems 2009
  • The Challenge for Hospital IT Managers
    • Hospitals typically have a number of network closets in locations spread out all over a facility and, in some cases, in numerous buildings.
    • These closets will often contain a one or two servers as well as a serial or network device.
    • Today hospital IT staff has no way of managing theses assets remotely other than using software products like VNC or Remote Desktop.
    • When IT staff is notified of an issue, they must first start a session in RDP (for example), enter the server and their password information, and authenticate. This is even before they ever start troubleshooting. Complicating matters even more, if the server has an OS level issue, the RDP or VNC is rendered useless.
  • The Challenge Continued
    • With hundreds of servers spread throughout numerous locations, it can be extremely time consuming and challenging to track down and manage troublesome servers and network devices.
    • If a server needs BIOS level access, IT staff currently must physically walk or travel to the network closet.
    • Using a traditional IP KVM is cost prohibitive because they are manufactured and priced to manage 8 or 16 servers. With 1 or 2 servers per location, you are paying for many ports you will never utilize.
    • This is inefficient and time consuming.
  • The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • To solve these challenges and make the day to day maintenance of servers and devices in hospital network closets more efficient, Minicom has developed the solution outlined in this presentation.
    • The Minicom Hospital Solution provides IT managers and administrators with a single browser based interface from where they can securely and seamlessly access any server or serial device, regardless of location.
    • The Minicom Solution not only enables users to access servers/devices via KVM, but seamless access to VNC, RDP, SSH, ILO and other remote access tools is also available.
    KVM.net II Interface
    • This means that with this solution in place, when an IT administrator receives a notification that a server/device is having trouble, he/she will merely open a browser, enter the IP address of the Minicom solution and have a searchable dashboard of all technology assets.
    • The user can choose to access the server via KVM or any other preset remote access tool.
    • This increases each users’ efficiency tremendously and reduces the amount of time a server/device is down.
    The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • The Minicom Hospital is comprised of the KVM.net II Remote Access Management Platform and the PX.
    • Unlike any product on the market, the Minicom PX USB ( http://www.minicom.com/kvm_px.htm ) is a 1-to-1 IP KVM that can be connected to each server and provides remote, secure browser based, BIOS level access to the servers, as well as the ability to remotely utilize CD-ROM, USB mass storage, ISO image and floppy disks to install patches and other fixes remotely from their desks.
    • This means that hospitals only purchase the number if IP KVM ports they require, rather than overpay for 8/16 ports switches, saving thousands of dollars or more when compared to traditional KVM.
    • The PX RS232 is available for serial devices and makes any device with a serial connection available over the network.
    The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • With many IP addresses, it becomes important for IT staff to have a single place where they can see all the servers, regardless of location, as well as access them for management. Minicom’s KVM.net II Remote Access Management Platform http://www.minicom.com/kvm_net.htm ) accomplishes this task.
    • Users merely click on the name desired server for access. This is true regardless of location. This means that all these remote network closet locations can be managed from the same interface.
    • KVM.net II also provides users with a consolidated interface to access ILO, RDP, VNC, SSH and other remote management technologies. This means that next to name of the server or device, a user will see the icons for the various other ways to access the machine. For instance, if servers have RDP, a simple click on the name with seamlessly pass the user’s password and user name, authenticate and put the user on the server desktop via RDP.
    The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • KVM.net II has no limitation to the number of concurrent users or servers managed, allowing IT staff to scale this solution to many more servers and users.
    • KVM.net II has no licensing fees.
    • All Minicom products are covered by a 3 year warranty.
    The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • Coming Q3 2009
    • Minicom is proud to announce that it will be introducing an enhancement to its remote management solution for hospitals.
    • The POC (power on cable) is a tiny power accessory that when combined with the PX will provide IT staff with the ability to reboot and control power to the connected server.
    • This enhancement will further increase IT staff efficiency and reduce the need to walk/travel to the servers to day-to-day maintenance.
    The Minicom Hospital Solution
    • Thanks for your interest in Minicom;
    • we look forward to meeting with you and discussing the next steps.
