- What is a computer name?
Computers on a network need unique names so they can identify and communicate with each other. It's best to keep computer names short (15 characters or fewer) and easily recognizable. The computer name cannot contain only numbers, cannot be the same as your user name, and cannot contain spaces or any of the following special characters: / [ ] : ; | < > " ” + = , ?
