  • How The Setting Affected The Plot The setting helped shape the plot because Jackson, Mississippi was in the south and equality was harder to find here than mostly anywhere else in the country at the time. People from out side of Jackson, such as Miss Celia, were nice to African Americans and that shows that the place where this story was set, was a big part of how people felt toward African Americans. In typical Jackson households in 1962, maids were treated terribly even though they were the ones who raised their children, cooked for them, cleaned for them and basically kept their lives together.
  • How the Characters Were Developed For example, the character Aibileen started out as a quiet loyal maid. As the story progressed, through words, actions and events the author showed how she became an even stronger and louder woman when it came to her rights as a person. Even though in the beginning she was scared to tell Skeeter about life as a maid, by the end she was respected by many for her courageous acts and she stood up for what was right even though it cost her job and many other things.
