  • 2. Why use Biography-Driven Instruction?
    • I went to this as a two day seminar in the Fall. I got so much out of it and have been using a lot of the strategies daily in my classroom. I wanted to share my favorites with everyone.
  • 3. My life in pictures & words
    • Think about three most important moments in your life.
    • Draw a picture of what it looked like in your head.
    • Write about it.
  • 4. Vocabulary Quilt
    • Fold a piece of chart paper to make eight rectangles.
    • Write vocabulary words in the center of each rectangle.
    • Write or draw of what comes to mind when you read each word. There are no wrong answers.
  • 5. Access: Grouping I + tpsi Total Group (Teacher to Class) Partner (Student to Student) Small Group (Focus on CLD biography) Individual (Student to Teacher/ Teacher/Student)
  • 6. Defining Objectives
    • Content Objectives are the WHAT
      • State or national standards
      • Key grade level content concepts
      • Prepare students by setting the stage for learning to occur.
    • Language Objectives are the HOW
      • List by concrete activities. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
      • I put pictures of each action next to each objectives.
  • 7. Linking language Contextual, Connecting, Conceptual
    • Think about the picture
    • Quickly write words or pictures you associate with the word.
    • Attach words or pictures to the center picture.
  • 8. Turn – N- Talk Connecting to stages of language acquisition.
    • Preproduction to Advance Fluent
    • Connected interactions with the TEXT
      • Cultural interactions
      • Schematic interactions
      • Linguistic interactions
  • 9. My memory bag
    • Look at the cover of the book.
    • Does it remind you of something? What?
    • Write or draw your memory and put it in your memory bag for next time.
  • 10. Four Dimensional Study
    • New vocabulary that is unfamiliar
    • write the word on an index card
    • Copy a sentence using the word.
    • Write your own definition using the word.
    • Write your own sentence using the word.
    • Draw a picture to illustrate the word.
  • 11. Thumb Challenge
    • Using pictures or words on strips have one student on each side. Each student starts on the same word or picture but on opposite sides. Whoever gets to the end first wins.
    • I use this for my spelling word practice the kids love it and it’s really easy to make on excel.
  • 12. Heart Activity
    • On a sheet of paper have students draw a heart big enough that they can write inside it.
    • Draw most important things, places, events, people, and things in their lives.
    • On the outside edges have student write about what they hate or dislike.
    • This is a great springboard for discussing feelings.
  • 13. DOTS chart
    • Before the lesson give students blank dots. Determine what they do know and have them place a dot beneath it.
    • During the lesson have students make the connection to what I am learning and what I already know. Making a connection.
    • After the lesson summarize what they have learned and have them place remaining dots.
  • 14. Pic-Tac-Tell
    • Conduct reading lesson that focuses on new vocabulary
    • Makes sure students can write, draw, or discuss these words in a permanent folder.
    • After lesson give students the
    • Pic-Tac-Tell grid and have students write 9 vocabulary words and use them in a sentence.
