Microprocessor • It is a multipurpose, programmable device that accepts digital data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and provides results as output. • A microprocessor is a programmable VLSI chip which controls and performs all operations in a microcomputer. Its main units are- – ALU – Registers – Control Unit
  • 3. • A microcomputer is a programmable machine. Modern computers are electronic and digital. The two principal characteristics of a computer are: – It responds to a specific set of instructions in a well- defined manner. – It can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program) – Its main components are • CPU • Input & Output devices • memory

History • The development of the first microprocessor began in 1969, when Intel engineer Marcian Edward "Ted" Hoff proposed to use a single-chip, general-purpose CPU to perform most computer programming functions. • The result was the first microprocessor, the 4004, which was announced by Intel in 1971. • This microprocessor evolved into a series of increasingly powerful Intel chips--the 286, 386, 486, and in 1993, the Pentium--for the International Business Machines (IBM) Corp. personal computer (PC) and IBM-compatible PCs.
  • 7. . • Meanwhile, Motorola Corp. developed the 68000 series of chips for the Macintosh personal computer made by Apple Computer. • Further advancements have led to robust microprocessors, such as the Intel core i7 microprocessor that is capable of rendering 3D images.
