  • 1. In this lesson you will learn: To use words that create “movies” for the reader; your words will enhance the overall meaning of your writing.
  • 2. Preface To enjoy the media clips that are part of this assignment, you will need Windows Media Player. Mac users may experience difficulties with parts of this presentation.
  • 3. Pre-Assessment
    • Before we get started, please take a minute to answer the following questions. Please write your answers in the text box below.

    • They paint a picture of what’s happening.
    • They reveal the artist’s message.

    • There are lots of reasons why words are important. Without words, we would draw pictures and grunt like cavemen.
  • 9. Phrases that paint pictures
      • Read these descriptions. One of them might make you hungry.
        • Pizza.
      • Pepperoni and pineapple pizza.
      • Can you see a difference?

      • Read the first verse and chorus lyrics to “The People.”
      • This is a challenging song to read and understand. Don’t worry about every word. Try to get a general idea of what the song is about .

    • Listen to the song and read the words at the same time.
    • Elements to consider: style, content of lyrics, themes, imagery, connections, rhythm, repetitions, etc.

    • With a partner, talk about the questions and answers. Write your answers in the text box below.
