    Slavery existed since ancient times
    Slaves were bought from African rulers and traders
    Around 11 million slaves reached America
    Some African rulers resisted, but they were not able to stop the slave trade
  • 4. Triangular Trade
    Merchants brought goods to Africa to trade for slaves
    Slaves were transported to the West Indies where they were traded for goods like sugar, tobacco and molasses
    These goods were then shipped to Europe

    Caused the decline of some African states and the rise of others (some small states disappeared all together)
    Rulers of powerful new states waged war against other Africans to gain control of the slave trade in their region
