    • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home CLEANING and INSPECTION CLEANING and INSPECTION Each year there are over 450,000 chimney fires causing loss to life and property in the USA alone. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys be cleaned or inspected semi- annually to ensure that you and your loved ones enjoy a safe winter. Chimney Inspections & Sweeping Our Chimney Sweeps use state-of-the-art equipment to inspect and sweep 1st- and 2nd-story chimneys of all kinds, including oil-, wood-, and gas-burning chimneys. While sweeping your system, we ensure that it’s in working order. We look for any problems that could prevent peak performance and recommend what is needed for your system to burn cleanly and properly.
    • CREOSOTE is the by-product of incomplete combustion of any fossil fuel such as wood, oil, or coal. When it builds up between 1/8 to ¼ inch it can ignite and cause a fire within the chimney. When this happens it can cause severe damage to the chimney and the surrounding structure. Some chimney fires create such an updraft that it has been described as a jet airplane or a train going through your living room. If the creosote catches fire on only one side of the flue, it may sound like the howling wind outside, but can still cause severe chimney damage. The purpose of the chimney is to exhaust smoke and by-products of combustion out of the house as well as provide a draft for the fireplace or appliance, not to contain chimney fires and their extreme temperatures.
    • SWEEPING includes the sweeping of the cap, flue, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper, and firebox area. The cleaning is all done with brushes on fiberglass poles. A runner is laid down up to the fireplace as well as drop cloths so nothing is tracked on any carpeting at all. While it is being swept the chimney is inspected for any cracks or defects and you are given a written evaluation report listing any areas of concern.

    • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home REPAIRS REPAIRS We repair all structural damage, correct all smoking problems and install energy saving dampers at a fraction of the cost of other chimney service companies! When the bricks face starts to flake off or "spall" the proper recommended repair is to rebuild the chimney. Rebuilding is the dismantling of the chimney brick work and relaying new brick with masonry cement. The top or crown of the chimney is finished off with a new precast concrete crown for small chimneys. Larger chimneys require a 4" thick poured concrete crown with a two-inch drip ledge overhang. There are many reasons for the damage to your chimney and all of our technicians are trained to help determine the cause of your chimney deterioration to help prevent this situation and hazard from happening in the future.
    • Magic City Chimney offers a full portfolio of chimney and venting system services. Whether it’s fireplaces, chimneys, or dryer vents, we understand the intricacies of the venting systems in your home. And we’re equipped to address all of your maintenance and safety needs. Our services include:
    • Relining, Repair, and Restoration According to NFPA Code 211 all chimneys shall have a flue liner that can contain and exhaust all by products of combustion including heat, dangerous gases, creosote and condensation. When the flue liner can no longer perform this intended purpose it shall be repaired or replaced. In most instances this is accomplished by using a metal pipe inserted from the top of the chimney down to the appliances. Our technicians are trained to know what type and grade of pipe is best for your chimney's needs. We offer the full range of repairs to chimney systems, big and small—from repairing leaky flashing to tuckpointing and masonry repair to relining the flue and chimney rebuilding. Rebuild Fireplaces Water damage resulting from a missing chimney cap is all too common. We remedy this situation by reconstructing the back walls of fireplaces, returning them to their original pristine condition. Rebuild Crowns Improperly built crowns are another common problem. If yours is cracked or poorly constructed—allowing water penetration or posing a fire hazard—we’ll build a proper concrete one that’s guaranteed not to crack. Install Chimney Caps The best way to prevent moisture from rain and snow, animals, leaves, and other debris from entering your chimney is to install a chimney cap.
    • Replace Chase Tops Leaky or damaged chase tops, and those made of masonry, are potential hazards on prefabricated metal fireplaces. We help eliminate problems before they start by replacing masonry and rusty metal chase tops. search... • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home WATER PROOFING and LEAKS WATERPROOFING and LEAKS The chimney being the largest structure to pass through the roof is therefore the most likely to cause a leak problem. Water and moisture damage both the inside and outside of masonry chimneys. In early Spring and late Fall when the temperatures are above freezing during the day, and dip below freezing at night, damage is done to masonry chimneys when the water trapped inside them expands during freezing. Protect your masonry chimney by having your flashing and caps inspected and/or replaced. Our roofing experience gives us a broad reach when handling these problems. If water is damaging your chimney inside or out, we’ll find and fix it—no matter the source.

    • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home DRYER VENT CLEANING DRYER VENT CLEANING Dryer vent cleaning and maintenance can prevent dryer fires and health hazards from afflicting your home. Clean vents will also increase your dryer's energy efficiency and performance. Home Vent Experts has been cleaning vents and ducts for more than 40 years. We come prepared to meet any obstacle we may encounter while keeping your most precious assets safe, clean and efficient. Our trained technicians provide and install safer alternatives to your existing ventilation system. Prevent Dryer Vent Fires About 35% of the lint from your clothing escapes the lint trap. The residual debris accumulates in your dryer ducts. Animal nests can pose a threat to vent safety. A dryer fire can be caused when hot air from your dryer exhaust meets with any type of dryer vent debris. Annually, dryers cause an average of 15,000 fires, 400 injuries and 20 deaths. Clean the air you breathe Each time you use your dryer, a damaged or clogged dryer vent adds one to two gallons of moisture to the air. Excess moisture promotes the growth of harmful bacteria and mildew which can create unhealthy conditions for you and your family. Save money on your electric bills Today, conscientious energy use is important in every household. Wasting electricity costs you money and unnecessarily depletes resources. Even with a clean vent, your dryer is the second least energy efficient appliance. If debris is restricting the air flow in a dryer vent , it causes your dryer work harder
    • and longer. A back draft of heat can cause your dryer to over-heat, leading to costly repairs or even replacement of the unit. search... • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home ANIMAL REMOVAL Animal Problems Solved At various times of the year, you may experience problems with animals such as raccoons, squirrels, and birds inhabiting your fireplace and chimney. Feel free to call Magic City Chimney to assist with these problems whether the animals are dead or alive. We are careful to provide the appropriate size removal cage to ensure no animals are harmed. Once removed they are released back into their natural habitat. If the animal is not completely healthy at the time of removal it is taken to the animal hospital for proper care. If we are called out to remove a deceased animal, it is properly removed and the fireplace/chimney is cleaned. This is to ensure that mites and lice are not produced from the decay and allowed to come into your home. It is important to make sure that you have the proper covering on your chimney all year round especially during the spring season, when the birds like to nest. The droppings and fecal matter associated with Chimney Swifts (with birds) has been related to the disease state called histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is an infectious disease of the lung caused by breathing in dust from bird fecal matter and droppings. It is common for these to collect on top of the fireplace damper. It is particularly important to protect the young, elderly, and people with immune deficiencies from this breathing problem and potential allergies. search... Main Menu q HOME

    • Magic City Chimney/205-380- 7410 Home FAQ FAQs Here are a few questions that our Chimney competitors hope YOU will NEVER ask! FAQ #1 -How often should my chimney be cleaned? The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual inspection/cleaning of all chimneys for safety. Removal of flammable creosote is one of the tasks that the sweep will perform while servicing your chimney. All of our sweeps can tell by the "ring" of the brushes if you have a cracked flue tile that needs attention. During the cleaning other areas that are checked for safety are your cap, flue, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper, firebox, exterior brick, flashing, and crown. If detected early, small repairs can save you thousands of dollars. Our sweeps are also trained in detecting third degree creosote glazing and helping to correct the cause of it. FAQ #2 -Who has chimney fires nowadays? The most recent figures from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission indicate that there are over 29,100 chimney/solid fuel related fires annually in America. A chimney fire happens when the creosote
    • deposited inside the chimney ignites. When this happens it is usually associated with a loud roaring sound, like an aircraft taking off or a train running through your living room. This is due to the tremendous amount of air rushing into your fireplace producing a blast furnace type of effect. A chimney fire can produce temperatures in excess of 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt mortar and spew flaming balls of creosote out of your chimney like a volcano. Some people have limited chimney fires just burning up one side of the flue sounding like the howling wind outside. Many times this will crack the clay flue liner leaving the homeowner in a more vulnerable situation should a second chimney fire occur. A common occurrence is a resulting structure fire transmitted through the brick from the intense heat. FAQ #3 -Do the powders and logs I see advertised to eliminate creosote really work? Powders and potions have been around for over twenty years that claim to reduce or eliminate creosote in the chimney. Our field observations of homeowners that try these chemicals have shown that not only do they not eliminate creosote, some are actually causing severe damage to the chimney interior. We have seen homeowners burning aluminum cans, potato peelings, and even chicken droppings. These methods not only do not eliminate creosote, they also produce a caustic acid when burned, and deposit on the inside of your chimney. Be wary of anything boasting all natural ingredients. In most cases this means sodium chloride (table salt) being deposited in your flue. Salt mixed with humidity and moisture spells disaster both for masonry and metal interiors of chimneys. Much like salt on your sidewalks in the wintertime. FAQ #4 -What type of wood is best to use in my fireplace? The most common type of wood to order from this area of the country is mixed hardwoods, followed by birch. Birch is not as popular as it is a softer wood and will burn twice as fast as the mixed hardwoods, also producing twice as much creosote. The most important thing is to burn a well- seasoned wood. Wood should be cut and split and left to dry 12 months and stored with a cover over the top with the sides left open for air circulation. Stay away from pine because of its high pitch content and never burn cardboard, plywood, Christmas wrapping, treated, or painted wood. The smokier the fire you have, the more creosote you will be depositing in your chimney. search... Main Menu q HOME q CLEANING and INSPECTION q REPAIRS q RELINING q WATER PROOFING and LEAKS
