Offers day services that are aimed at enriching the lives and personal knowledge of people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.</li></li></ul><li>The ARC of Monroe County cont.<br /><ul><li>Their main initiative is to enhance and enrich the lives of those with disabilities and raise money in effort to help provide financial benefits for their quality of life
  7. 7. One of their most valued and requested services for the families and caregivers is that of a Special Sitter. </li></li></ul><li>What is a Special Sitter?<br /><ul><li>A person who is trained to assist people with intellectual or developmental disabilities
  8. 8. Sitters go through a week long program about communication skills, special needs awareness, creative activities, First Aid and CPR
  9. 9. They are trained to know what to do if </li></ul>someone had a seizure or violent outburst. <br />
  10. 10. What is a Special Sitter cont. <br /><ul><li>They go to the home of the individual and play or work on activities with them
  11. 11. They are paid by the families they are assisting. If the family cannot afford a Special Sitter, they can apply to be reimbursed</li></li></ul><li>Why are they important?<br /><ul><li>Very few people are trained to assist a person with intellectual or developmental disabilities
  12. 12. Special Sitters allow the family members to spend time away from the home, knowing that their loved one is safe
  13. 13. May delay or prevent some families from needing to seek alternate living arrangements for their family members </li></li></ul><li>What do I need to be a Special Sitter?<br /><ul><li>Patience
