The document discusses several leadership theories and styles including: directive, participative, and laissez-faire leadership styles; Hersey and Blanchard's four leadership styles of directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating; Fiedler's contingency theory of relationship-motivated and task-motivated leadership styles; and Path-Goal theory which focuses on setting goals and clearing paths for subordinates to accomplish goals. It also discusses the author's experience as a music teacher in Singapore and observations of the principal's leadership at their school, noting challenges around student numbers, teacher attendance, job responsibilities, and school management.
3. Point of view:
Leadership might be totally different from management but
management is leadership too
There are three kinds of leadership:
a. Directive- Authoritative
b. Participative- show concern for the needs of the subordinates
c. Laissez- faire/ free- reign leadership- where leader permits
subordinates to lead themselves
4. Hersey and Blanchard developed four leadership styles and they
are:
a. Directing
b. Coaching
c. Supporting
d. Delegating
5. FIELDER’S CONTINGENCY THEORY
TWO MAJOR LEADERSHIP STYLES:
a. Primarily relationship-motivated
- gets satisfaction from good personal relations
with other people
b. Primarily task- motivated
- where leader obtain his main satisfaction in
getting things done
6. PATH GOAL THEORY OF LEADERSHIP
- is an action- oriented approach to leadership effectiveness
- it gives leaders’ functions and roles to achieve group goals
TWO MAIN GOALS
a. Set goals with subordinates
b. Find paths and clear them so that goals be accomplished
7. - Robert House and others explained that Path- Goal Model is
based on various motivational theories part. Expectancy
Theory of Motivation
- Its essence is to link employees’ needs, goals and paths that
will motivate them to perform
- Satisfaction, motivation and leader acceptance
* Managers’ job is to create motivational environment that
enhances the likelihood that employees will behave toward
goals. This requires communication with subordinates to
obtain insights that will motivate them
8. TEACHER AS A LEADER
I am working as a music teacher in Singapore. In teaching, you have to
acquire also leadership skills not only for my students but also for myself
because I am teaching in a country where culture is different from ours and
same with the upbringing they have for their children.
As a teacher, I need to lead them in a way that will motivate them learn and
love music that for some seems to be boring or something that does not exist
to them.
9. LEADERSHIP IN OUR SCHOOL
My school here in Singapore has three branches and with my observation, it
is really hard to our employer to be a principal. Having people from different
countries with different backgrounds and approaches in teaching, is already a
tough responsibility but if I am going to based it on the existence of the
school, I can say that our employer is doing quite good of having 10 years in
the business.
From the way he handles his people, I can say that he is a leader with
balance. Yes, leaders motivate but leaders do challenge too his people and
it’s a good thing for a subordinate for him to know what he can still give for
the school. It is something that lets you discover a different capabilities of
yours. Something that can help you grow as a teacher, as being part of an
organization and as being a person.
10. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
There are lots of problems occur and possible to occur in a school organization
and these are:
a. Number of students (source of income)
b. Attendance of a teacher
c. Equality of job responsibilities
d. Management of the School
11. SOLUTIONS
- The solution will all come from the Head of the Organization and that is our
principal. It will start from the character that he possesses and the mission and
vision he has for the school and everything will just follow and leads its ways. This
is where leadership comes in. Everything depends on a good leader with good
character and possesses skills that can handle everything and put them into
proper places.
- Let’s take for example problem number one which is number of students. It is one
of the problems mainly because this is where the school gets its income and
without the proper figures or numbers of them, there will be a problem on how the
school will continue and how the principal will respond to his other responsibilities
like the maintenance of the school and the salary he needs to provide for his
teachers and staff. That is why he needs to motivate his subordinates to think of
things that can attract parents and students to be part of the school. It can be
promotions or free music lessons for them for them to be encouraged and get
motivated to music. With this, I can say that proper management will come in.
12. CONCLUSION
Management does not simply mean to manage but it
possesses LEADERSHIP
Management is leadership but leadership is not management
