### Mixtures and solutions

1. 1. + Mixtures and Solutions Vocabulary
2. 2. + Mixture: two or more materials stirred together.
3. 3. + Property: a characteristic of an object, something you can observe (color, shape, size, or texture)
4. 4. + Solution: a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in water. Note: solutions must be CLEAR!
5. 5. + Dissolving: when one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear.
6. 6. + Elements: cannot be reduced to simpler substances (everything on earth is made from these). coppergold aluminum
7. 7. + Earth’s most common elements: Other, 7% Silicon, 13 % iron, 35% Magnesiu m, 17% Oxygen, 2 8%
8. 8. + Elements in you! Calcium, 2% Nitrogen, 3% Other, 2%Hydrogen, 10 % Carbon, 18% Oxygen, 65%
9. 9. + Mixtures and Solutions singing video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=#189E19
10. 10. + Solute: a substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution. Solvent: a substance that dissolves the solute to form a solution.
11. 11. + Saturated Solution: a solution in which as much solute as possible has been dissolved.
12. 12. + Concentration: the amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid.
13. 13. + Dilute: to make a solution less concentrated, usually by adding more liquid.
14. 14. + Volume: is the 3-dimensional space occupied by something (like a liquid).
15. 15. + Chemical reaction: when two or more materials are mixed together and a change occurs.
16. 16. + Precipitate: a solid material that forms as a product of a reaction.
17. 17. + Atom: the smallest particle of an element. Atoms are the building blocks of matter.
18. 18. + Molecule: The smallest part of a substance that is made up of two or more atoms.
