Slideshow transcript

Slide 1: Road Trip Mr. Sheehy’s analogy to the research paper

Slide 2: How can a road trip be like a research paper? paper

Slide 3: Isn’t that an insult to the coolest American experience, the road trip? trip

Slide 4: Listen, it makes sense.

Slide 5: Both involve a process. process Both involve sharing your discoveries.

Slide 6: Need more?

Slide 7: Okay, let’s take a look.

Slide 8: Step One

Slide 9: Decision time.

Slide 10: Where are you going?

Slide 11: It’s like choosing a topic,

Slide 12: Or creating a thesis.

Slide 13: Step Two

Slide 14: Prepare.

Slide 15: Plan.

Slide 16: Collect info on what you want to see.

Slide 17: Sound like research? It should.

Slide 18: Step Three

Slide 19: Start packing.

Slide 20: You’re doing more than packing, though.

Slide 21: You’re organizing,

Slide 22: Making sure nothing ends up in the wrong place.

Slide 23: So when it’s time to go, you’re ready.

Slide 24: For this, teachers use words like

Slide 25: categorize,

Slide 26: and organize,

Slide 27: and tools like

Slide 28: note cards

Slide 29: and outlines.

Slide 30: Step Four

Slide 31: Hit the road,

Slide 32: See everything,

Slide 33: send a postcard,

Slide 34: & take pictures.

Slide 35: It’s like a report. report

Slide 36: But if anyone is to follow you

Slide 37: It has to make sense.

Slide 38: That’s why there is

Slide 39: Step Five

Slide 40: Leave a trail

Slide 41: that can be followed.

Slide 42: So if your friends want,

Slide 43: They can eat where you ate,

Slide 44: or not,

Slide 45: and do what you did,

Slide 46: or not.

Slide 47: Teachers call this

Slide 48: Writing citations

Slide 49: And making a works cited.

Slide 50: So let’s be honest, then.

Slide 51: It’s hard work.

Slide 52: It would be easier to hand your friends a pile of brochures and a map,

Slide 53: Or to hand in to your teachers a list of url’s. www.flickr.com/photos/33264067@N00/243089839 www.flickr.com/photos/64264362@N00/13227861 http://find.galegroup.com/menu/commonmenu.do?userGroup Name=sdln_sds&action=updateCspList&searchTerm=maple& DB=GVRL- 0_SPJ.SP00_JRC_DC_GVRL.sdbc_GVRL.sdec_GVRL.sdlnh tc_GVRL.sdlnlgc_GVRL.sdlnmc_GVRL.sdlnsc_STOJ_STOM _ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple www.flickr.com/photos/62528187@N00/302328043 www.flickr.com/photos/46555636@N00/455282196

Slide 54: But your friends want to hear what YOU thought about your trip,

Slide 55: And your readers want to hear what you think about your topic.

Slide 56: And in the end,

Slide 57: it’s worth it.

Slide 58: Just think of it

Slide 59: as a road trip.
