Term-kali or Kahle- German for potash.

‘ quali’- Arabic word means alkali.

‘ K’ is a chemical element or a metal.

Normally exists as a solid at 298 K

History

First isolated in 1807 by Sir Humphy Darg.

He obtained it through electrolysis of very dry molten Caustic Potash.

It was the first metal isolated by electrolysis.

Sir Darg coined the word ‘Potassium’- a Latinized version of potash.

The symbol ‘K’ is from Latin word ‘Kalium’.

Properties

‘ K’ is the 7 th most abundant element and constitutes 2.45% of earths crust &

0.35% of body – K

Water soluble

Soft and easily cut with a knife

Rapidly oxidizes in air (must be stored under argon or under a suitable mineral oil)

Decomposes in water with evolution of H2

Catches fire during reaction with water

Never occur in free form

Isolated by electrolysis of chloride/ hydroxide.

Role of ‘K’ in maintaining health

Is one of the electrolyte essential for the smooth functioning of human body and the most abundant mineral in the body

70% of the +ve ions inside cells

rest are a mixture of Na, Mg, Ca, Argine and others

Serum contains 4.5mg of total K

RBC contains 420mg.

So RBC level of ‘K’ is an indication of ‘K’ status.

‘ K’ is a very significant body mineral –for cellular and electrical function.

It is distributed to the cells by a process of passive diffusion and is regulated by an enzyme called Adenosine triphosphate with the level of sodium concentration inside the cells.

K and Na are antagonistic. An imbalance of one cause imbalance of other.

Functions of K

K along with Na regulates the water balance, acid- base balance in blood and tissues.

The therapeutic applicability of this group is due to the presence of Potassium in all protoplasm, all living substances, both plants and animals.

CNS: anxiety, dishearted, fear of everything, aversion of being alone etc.

Locomotor system:

- muscles – general weakness and relaxation

- paralytic effect – mainly extensors ( constipation, involuntary urination, drooping of eyelids)

Yellowish/ greenish- k bich

A combination of potassium with fat produces salt. Thus it can be compared to the soap suds sputum of kali iod.

When caustic potash is swallowed, it produces a brownish film of mucous membrane and there may be spots of denuded epithelium.

The inflammation may increase to the extend to an ulceration and produce severe vomiting. This is common in many potassium salts, especially K.bich.

Experiments on mammals shows that K.salts especially carbonates paralyses the muscles. This accounts for the general weakness which is the hallmark of all K.salts.
