We researched the Fortune 100 CEOs in the US to see how many were using social media services like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Wikipedia. The results are shocking - not one CEO has a blog and only 13 have LinkedIn profiles. We found the top CEOs to be disconnected from the rest of the world. If they want to connect with their target audience and raise their company’s visibility, they need to change how they interact online.

  • erichayward Eric Hayward , Creative Accounts Director at Quixotic Really interesting, glad somebody took the time to unearth this fact, but devil's advocate: is not being involved in social media perhaps the right perception for a CEO, to dcelistan's point? We're still at that stage where the tactic is being seen as more important than the integrated strategy. Must - get - Twitter - account. I want to see the follow-up presentation countering this potential objection. There must be some value in CEOs using social media. What is it? Tell me. 2 years ago Reply

  • nbourre Nat Bourre , Medical Marketing and Social Media Consultant at Marketing 4 Health Inc. This is truly interesting, and I really do hope to see those numbers grow in the future. Although I am a great believer in the power of social media, and I promote its use within the Canadian medical industry, social media is still a tactic. A strong leader does not get involved in tactics, but rather in guiding the strategic direction of the corporation. However, it is difficult to really comprehend the potential of social media marketing without being involved in it yourself. It would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between successful social media programs in companies where senior management participates in social media themselves. If you do this type of study, please let keep us in the loop of the results. 2 years ago Reply
