Specimen Collection Procedures:
Urinalysis random nonsterile specimen
Explain the procedure.
Label the container with the clients identifying information, and follow
policy for transport and sending specimen to the laboratory.
Clean-catch midstream (CCMS) for culture and sensitivity (C&S)
Teach the technique for obtaining the specimen.
After thorough cleansing of the urethral meatus, the client catches the
urine sample midstream.
Catheter urine specimen for C&S
This requires obtaining a sterile specimen from a straight or indwelling
catheter using surgical asepsis (sterile technique).
Timed urine specimens Collect for 24 hr or other prescribed duration.
Discard the first voiding.
Collect all other voidings following facility policy on appropriate
storage, labeling, and transport of the specimen.
